I realize that this post is loaded with controversy and run-on sentences, but I would like to point out that I in no way wish to impeach the honor of those who haved served or are serving our counrty. In fact, it is for the honor of those same men and women that I felt compelled to write this post.

It is the soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us the freedom of the press which is now under attack by an effort being made to overturn laws which prevent a potential monopoly of news, thereby creating a massive propaganda machine unchecked and able to spew whatever bull5h!t the party sees fit for mass consumption

It is the soldier, not the poet
who was duped and ordered by evil, ruthless men to kill innocent people and take their resources under the guise of “liberation and freedom” so a few corporate fat cats in Washington could profit greatly while the rest of us live in fear, and who will no doubt suffer permanent physical and psychological damage, while without question carrying out these orders with a sense of duty and honor

It was the soldier, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial, which is ironically being made more and more unattainable on a daily basis by Bush and Company with things like the so-called “Patriot Act” and other beacons of justice which take away the very things that so many valiant soldiers have died for in the past, and who are now in jeopardy of returning home to a totalitarian regime which they themselves unknowingly helped to create

It is the soldier who salutes the flag
which not so long ago was a symbol of freedom and opportunity for all people, but is quickly becoming a regalia of world oppression, and a call to arms by those who would bastardize the deaths of these heroic men and women by putting a façade of patriotism over their vile and disgusting lies in order to profit, while at the same time forwarding their sick agendas and insatiable lust for power

Follow your heart, the truth shall make you free!!!

: Hey, madmax, ignore the feeble diagnostics of those who apparently believe we all don't have much time left.

Last time, the question was, 'Why do you care?' and it was answered beautifully. No need to repeat that.

Thank you for this poignant, moving piece and the contrasts you make could not be more true. Sadly.

Max...thought you might find this ariticle interesting in view of your OP. Here is a taste:

"If America wants to honor those who have lost their lives in military conflicts and properly remember war so that future generations will adequately grasp its horror and significance, then it must care a great deal about the number of foreign soldiers who are killed. America must also show great concern over the number of Iraqi (or Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, or Somali) families that lost children and grandfathers and aunts: individuals who had nothing to do with keeping their governments in power and never once hurt the United States. As long as American culture continues to indulge in its own grief in a spectacle of selfishness, while simultaneously denying the recognition due others who have suffered far greater losses, Memorial Day will remain an empty, pretentious event carried out by the world's most arrogant nation."

There are other links to other articles in the Memorial Day thread you might find interesting also.

Joyce, you are really good at praising max's best points.

And madmax, you are just plain good sometimes. I had a little talk this weekend with a friend (who is to right as I am to left), and my points were similar (but not so very eloquent) as yours.

She agreed completely.

That's just how bad it is becoming.
