Welcome to the February support, community, information, conversation, and fun thread for UUs and UU curious.

Here is the link to the previous January thread.

Come on in and say "Hi", ask a question, tell a story, or feel free to just lurk for awhile.

In honor of February:

At the end of each service at my church the congregation says "Let us go from this place open to life, expecting to love, and prepared to serve." I really like that routine affirmation that we should have loving as an expectation of ourselves.

My PC screen saver is the banner and my current quote is:

Quote:
"The opposite of hatred is not love. The opposite of hatred is compassion. Love is so powerful that it stands alone, unopposed." ~ David Pyle
Wishing everyone a month filled with joy, peace, and especially love!

At the end of every service we say,

"We extinguish this flame,
but not the light of truth,
the warmth of community,
or the fire of commitment.
These we carry in our hearts until we
are together again."

One of my favorite parts of the service!

On NPR this afternoon, they were talking about sex ed in schools - what's being taught, what's not being taught, different opinions, what's working (and how do you define "working") - and one of the panelists they talked to was the project director for the OWL program. It was nice. My favorite part was when the host said that she is from a very liberal faith, and not every religion is that way, what does she say to people who perhaps don't want their children to learn about other sexual orientations, or about anything but abstinence - and she said that the OWL program doesn't tell anyone what to believe really, but each step of the way helps them to clarify their own beliefs, and to understand things more fully. *sigh* She said it SO much better. Probably why she's the program director and I'm not!

Thanks! We saved her placenta and will be planting a fruit tree on the church grounds once the ground is thawed for teh summer with it. Our minister is very excited to do this!

We will also be having a naming and dedication ceremony at the church as well!

We are so very excited to bring her into such a wonderful church community!

Congratulations!

Does anyone else do a chocolate communion near Valentine's? We each bring in one wrapped piece of chocolate and put it in a bowl. At the end of the sermon when we're walking out, we pick a different piece! We're also doing ice cream sundaes after church that day.:

Good luck- I know how it feels to have your hopes and expectations unmet when "church shopping." Happily, I also know how great it feels to find that place full of possibility.

We took her to service this morning and there was a special congrats in the order of service for us too. Our mom's group does "meals for moms" too and a few peopel brought us some nice yummy food. Chicken Jumbalaya and beef stew so far - they do meals every other day for two weeks. Later this week one of teh moms is callign in a pizza order for us since she is 100 miles away and wants to help out too. So that will be a welcome treat.

Congratulations Mommy Storm Raven! :

So great you have a meals for moms service. Is that through your church?

Is anyone planning on going to General Assembly in Salt Lake City in June? I wish I could go, but DP isn't going to want to spend his vacation time going with us to my church conference, and the kids are too young to do it without him.

My church is having a pot-luck party Saturday night. The theme is "Love Makes a Family". Apparently there will be, and I quote from our weekly update, "Potluck dinner, valentine card making, cookie decorating, games and crafts for children and adults." DD and I are planning to go. I was a tiny bit hesitant about planning to spend my Valentine's Day evening this way, but I ran it by my husband and he said "Go ahead. It's not like we were going to have a romantic date night or anything." Valentine's Day has never really been a big romantic holiday for us. DD and I usually have a great time at these family parties, so I am looking forward to it.

Yesterday after church (the first time I have been in weeks - my family is finally all healthy again! , I was filmed doing a short Q&A format testimonial kind of thing as part of creating our Breakthrough Congregation video to be shown at General Assembly. I don't know if I will end up in the final product, but it was pretty cool.

Hi Adele,

What's a Breakthrough Congregation?

I am also wondering if anyone here has attended a UU Family camping trip? If so, what kind of activities were offered? I'd like to help organize one here for this summer so I am looking for format, activities, advice, etc.?

Many thanks!

Each year the UUA selects 4 Breakthrough Congregations that have shown sustained growth and/or have overcome obstacles and/or are particularly vibrant and thriving. The selected congregations give a workshop at General Assembly and create a video to be shown at General Assembly.

Regarding the camping, I have never been to a UU camp, so I can't help much there (sorry!), but I know there are people on this forum who have. My minister is going to be the Chaplain for a new summer camp in our district this summer. Here is the web page about it.

i am so curious about our local uu church but know nothing about it. i see the rainbow sign and signs for a vegetarian coffeehouse and that interests me. i asked dh and he said we'd probably like it b/c it seems very liberal. how can i find out more? (i'm sure the obvious answer is just go to a service but honestly we are lutherans and heavily involved in our church - but i'm just not feeling it anymore - and i don't even know what "it" is....kwim?

so - i feel like checking out other churchs (which is something i wish i did when i initially went running from my roman catholic background ...only to jump into our now "catholic-lite" community.......sigh.......

anyway - just subbing i guess
