Apologies for my absence, ladies.

It's been a week. Aside from STILL waiting for my new laptop to arrive (and hence sharing one old, slow PC with the whole family) we also had someone break into our house on Wed. It appears that all they took was a fire safe that didn't have its lock with it. Nothing of value much to anyone in there but it is going to be a pain in the ass to get everything replaced.

So I went shopping for a big dog. And we got one! We are now the owners of a 5 yo, 180# great dane. Yes, like a said A BIG DOG. But he is so loving and sweet. He certainly thinks he's small enough to curl up on your lap. And he is so big that he can sit on the couch and still have is front feet on the floor.

Once my new laptop finally arrives (early next week) I'll be able to attempt to keep up and actively comment.

Until then, blessed be,

I havent decided what to do for Yule cards this year. I havnet even gotten started on presents or anything. we are going to start decorating hopefully the weekend of thanksgiving. trying to talk DHi nto doing it earlier. i figuure the sooner we get it up the less rushed we will feel about it. maybe it will feel more relaxed for DH. He gets so frustrated and stressed out sometimes. i worry about his heart. drinks, smokes, worries, easily frustrated, etc. and he wonders why i want to feed him garlic and onions all the time. lol.

We're sticking to the "Something to wear, something to read, something you want, and something you need" formula for the most part. Of course, we celebrate Solstice, Christmas, and 12th Night so we might end up with three sets of gifts.

Immediate family (grandparents) will get ornaments with the kiddos' handprints. Extended family/relatives/friends are each going to get a card explaining how a family was hosted through mdc's holiday helper in their honor along with a tree ornament featuring a family. Service providers (our postal worker, prechool and RE teachers, dh's lab assistants) will get home made hot rice packs or hand warmers.

For decorations we'll gather pine greens in the forest (wearing blaze orange and singing loudly since it's hunting season), dry out orange/lemon slices, and cut paper snowflakes. Also golden spirals from paper and beaded ribbons (knot cheap ribbon or string around randomly strung beads). Also our holiday box has ribbon bows and wall art for the holiday season alomg with the tree ornaments. This year I'd really like to make stockings for everyone. Of course, I say that every year and we're still using the "temporary" store bought ones!

Made a super yummy pumpkin coconut ginger soup last night. Fast, easy, and very very yummy. Mmmmmmmm!

Arrgh -- lost long post.

I'm going to post my dress list, dress by dress and edit it, so it doesn't happen again...

I thought I'd have fun with this one. I do like my flouncy skirts!

But it seems the rest of you are going more formal, with floor-length gowns.

That rossetticouture site the rest of you are shopping on is truly stunning. Even the ballet dresses. If I were picking off that site, it'd be this dress. I think I'd love the 18th c shape and the colors....

Now, when I was shopping for what most of you would call a prom dress, there was this burgundy taffeta one that was way out of my price range....I still remember how I felt when I had it on in the dressing room though. So I went shopping for burgundy taffeta gowns....

Here is one. The model's hair is even a little like mine...

This one is more like the one I didn't get when I was a teenager.

But, you know, it is chilly November and the corsets are not as appealing to me as they once were. So I'm going with this deep scarlett gothic gown in velvet with a lace up, but not a corsetted bodice...beautiful, warm and very pretty...and even on sale irl , I think! My fantasy version will have a very sexy black petticoat, too.

Oh, or maybe this one but in the same color of velvet, not panne.
Because certainly on MDC, my color oughta be a deep purple....

Ok, final edit, way too much time spent dress shopping.

m3m -- horrible about the break-in, I'd get a dog, too.

Maia, I continue to root for you and hope all turns out the way you need it to with your guy.

How many of us have 3-yr-olds? Did your son ever get to sleep, Cari? Is your dd 3, Wombatclay? Commiserations on the holiday decoration phobia.... I am experiencing a similar parental mix of frustration and suppressed laughter with my son's random agoraphobia. Sometimes, the process of leaving the house precipitates an hour-long meltdown. But I haven't figured out the triggering factor(s).

I don't feel as organized as you with your holiday planning, Wombatclay. I have this course to finish -- want to get it DONE this week, as I only have to work for two days. But I've been wasting/enjoying my day dress shopping, and I have to get my fridge and stove properly cleaned this morning. Canning season is over, and I have white appliances, and well, they *used* to be white....

3 c pumpkin/squash puree
1 c coconut milk
2 c stock (I was out so I used more coconut and plain water boiled with some herbs)
2 tsp lemon juice
1 tablespoon fresh grated ginger (I used more cause I like ginger )

Stick it all in a blender till smooth, then in a pot to heat for a few minutes.

The leftovers made part of today's lunch and the final bit will go into tomorrow's pancakes. Yum!

Yikes about the break in! Glad nothing good was taken tho! I miss our great dane, I found her walking down the highway one day, pulled my little VW jetta over and she jumped on in. She was already old, I loved that dog.

My CP is on the fritz, hence my less than active posting lately too. Hope you LT comes soon!

Thanks for the pumpkin coconut soup recipe...I am so making that one, have a bunch of little pie pumpkins that need to be turned into puree this week. And putting the leftover into pancakes is perfect.

Maia -- what a post to miss, your engagement one! Well, congratulations!!!! (three of each for the family you will be)

The soup recipe is for "cups"... that said, I stink at following recipes so I actually used two cans of pumpkin and one can of coconut. Which wasn't exactly 3 and 1.

Well, I'm not officially engaged, yet. Am I? I told him he needs to ask again when I'm there in person.
For those of you who missed the post, it's one or two pages back, and I wrote it reallytiny on the bottom, in pink.

Why three? One for my son? Aww.

I just called him-- we last spoke this morning. It's 7pm now. He's been drinking and he doesn't want to talk to me. I think he's ashamed of his state of mind at the moment, knowing I'm in recovery; I think he thinks he let me down, but I'm not sure. I will have to wait for morning to find out I hope he's OK We both have a seriously dark streak, but his is closer to the surface than mine, and I don't want him doing anything stOOpid (like going out and scoring drugs or something) because he's under the influence and not thinking clearly. Egads. And I have such an active imagination.

Oh gods, mamas, I want to talk to him NOW. I want to tell him it's OK. And he's in no state to talk to me, even if he wanted to. I think he wants to but can't, so he says he doesn't want to. Dang.

Watched Princess Bride today-- mamas, that is such a sweet movie. It is so us, he is right. I love him. Shall I honor the wait-till-morning phone call?

I'm going classic I think... possibly Inara's ShinDig gown. it looks breastfeeding friendly and has that "supported middle" I need with ym postpartum belly without an actual corset.

I lurve that Inara's gowns are all a bit more "languid" than other formal wear. not sure about this one though... most of her other gowns are a bit less structured so I may go with one of them. Perhaps something in red?

YIKES! I've had my car stolen, and had someone attempt to break into my house so I know what a violation it is! Have you got deadbolts etc? Maybe invite a spectral house guardian to hang around to give any potential burgalurs the creepies and make them bolt?

My youngest is 3 - and he has meltdown over anything... without warning. My girls never had this though... at least not to the extent he does. Today its because we are not cratering to his demand of only watch Scooby-Doo

We are watching that movie right now!!

We actually have had quite the movie day today (Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, and now Princess Bride), esp. with having the oldest so sick. She started out Thursday with a sore throat, that now includes a cough and fever. Poor thing.

Well, of course there will be bling He has said as much ("You'll marry me? You'll wear my ring if I get you one?" )
But I'm not officially engaged yet because it needs to be in person, right? Or...what are the rules, anyway?

I sent him an email that basically says don't worry about the partying. That just because I don't drink doesn't mean there aren't people in the world who do, and I can't pretend alcohol doesn't exist. I wouldn't know how to handle it, nor would I probably be happy, if he was buzzing in my presence, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
I also broke the wait-till-morning call but he's not answering. At least his phone isn't turned off. That means he's deliberately not answering, or he went somewhere and left it home.
So I left a voicemail that tells about the email. I really don't want him spiraling downwards about a decision that he made that it's kind of too late for, kwim? He'll just have to sleep it off.
I'm trying hard not to worry about further stupid decisions, and just know that he loves me and will be alright. Nothing really bad (or bad at all) has come of my panicking, yet. This time will be fine, too ~she said, trying to sound convincing~

It's ok Maia. Really. He'll be ok in the morning and you'll be one day closer to Boston! And as for rules... hmmmm. Don't think there are any. Bling is pretty, love is wonderful, partnering is a blessing, and you m'dear rock the whole thing! Just hang on annd you'll be there before you know it.

Isn't Princess great? The book is good too, and different enough from the film. Maybe see if the library has a copy you can read on the plane? Or bring a copy for your fellow? It could make a sweet anniversary type thing... watching or reading Princess together?

We've watched Kiki a dozen times now... I'm thinking it may make a good solstice gift. It's not exactly "something to read" though.

No rules When dh asked me to marry him I was sitting in a hotel, and he was in his barracks room. I was still a junior in high school too!! When he came home a couple weeks later, we picked out a ring. There was not a 2nd proposal (I didn't ask for one)...but apparently he had one all planned out, it just didn't happen. But that's ok. Twice I have had a giant multi-quoted message only to lose my connection! So forget it!

I searched hi & lo for the right dress for the birthday party, and this is by far the most beautiful thing I found. I don't know yet, if this is the ONE yet or not.

I was up all night looking at HS curriculums and trying to find a good pre-preK set that isn't Christian. I am pretty excited that all points look to me being able to really HS DD!!

Peace- Heather

Hehehe It's funny, I met dh in january 99, we were both getting ready to exit unhappy relationships, and we lost touch through all that. We were friends and chatted in the #wicca room on mIRC's dalnet. We got in touch by chance in December of 99 when I was preparing to move out & file for divorce. I moved out in Feb, we spoke daily, and online as well. We planned for him to fly over in May at the same time a mutual net friend was visiting me He never really *asked* me to marry him, we both just kind of assumed that would be ocurring because neither of us wanted to be apart from the other, ever. I'm so blown away that May will be TEN years together!

*face palm* i didn't realize that there was a book of The Princess Bride! I know your reply wasn't meant for me - but i know I'll be checking our library system for this!!

I love Kiki's Delivery Service (which is what i assume you are watching) - it is cute

Yeah - i dont think there needs to be "rules" to getting engaged... DH asked me at 5:30am Dec 31st... no ring, just said "You know, the only reason i haven't asked you to marry me, is because I think you'll say no". We ended up getting a cheap $20 ring from Walmart a week or 2 later. i love my ring - the design, the size (i have small hands and didn't want something huge)... for me, i didn't need mega bling.

But - regardless - congrats to you!!

WOO HOO! I'm hoping to be HSing by the spring semester - i have a lot of details to iron out first - curriculums is actually the least of my worries! But, just curious - where/what curriculum did you find?

Well - you never know - Maybe Dalaran is a popular name in fiction... somewhere

My son's speech is getting so much clearer - but in the middle of a meltdown - i think i may actually understand German better then him - and we're on a total Scooby-Doo phase right now - its maddening.

I got to say - i'm loving all the links to these stunningly beautiful dresses - simply stunning!!

So much for being a lurker - huh? LOL

Here are a few pagan HS things I found, but I am still narrowing it down for us!

Grey School of Wizardry - too old for us, but someone here should like it!

Acorn Hollow

Goddess Moon Circle

Global Village School
- UU not really pagan

Sacred Grove Acedemy

Sacred Spiral Kids - fun stuff here

This list was from the nice pagan HS group at Cafemom admin.

Thanks, Clay, for the reassurance.
Turns out he didn't even go out; he'd gotten depressed and went to the package store and got drunk by himself at home. He's only sporadically taking his depression meds He has a personal stigma about mental illness. Argh. He didn't want to talk about it.
I said, listen, if there's anyone that knows about alcohol and depression it's me. It's an ineffective remedy and script drugs are fine and get your arse back on them. He's really beating himself up, I think, cause he won't talk about it and got kind of edgy with me about it.
He's been so alone for so long, and has such armored walls. They've started crumbling, but it's going to be a long haul, for both of us. I've already realized that this relationship is going to be the hardest work I've ever done. Not for/on/about him, but me.
We're both such master bullsh*tters. And we can't bullsh*t one another. Plus we have promised not to. It's so, so intense.

As for the book, yes, I think I will look into that. I'm wondering if it's the same William Goldman that wrote other books I've read. How can it not be? Did you read "Boys and Girls Together"? Sick book, that, but I loved it

He asked you on the phone, too? Boy, that's young. Well, he's 52 and I'm 50 but we should have been together all these years, so in our minds we are still, in a way, 14 and 17

Well, it really happened like this. It was like 9pm and we both had to get up at 4am and we needed to get off the phone soon.
I just...I don't know where it came from, but I just blurted out "I want to marry you, M____ C____" and he hesitated a second, then said "Will you marry me?", kind of incredulously.
That's when I said "Oh hell yeah. HELL yeah. Only you have to ask me in person, when I get there". He said "I will get down on one knee and give you a ring and..." and I interrupted and said "no, no knee thing; I will crack up"
Well. Time will tell. I know that neither of us wants to be apart from the other, ever, too

I don't care about cost or anything, either. I'm a very simple person, really. I told him that. That I'm a cheap date and I'm all about not wasting bucks-- $20K toilet seats are insane, etc.etc.etc.
He said he agreed with me on that point, but he wants to treat me like, well, a princess (princess bride) and wants me to have the best. So he's taking me out to some swanky seafood place, I think-- I'm so not about spending a ton of money in things like restaurants; I told him I want to go to one of their many old-fashioned diners But whatever.
Srsly, I'm all about having a ring, yes, but I'd rather he pay my outrageous cell phone bill than spend too much money on jewelry

I'm feeling better but ds keeps having stomach pains. Not sure if it's from being constipated or if he's getting sick.
See, this is why I don't want to even go to his public school for therapies. We visited briefly on Friday. Good grief.
I'll be calling the Special Education Director tomorrow to see if we can get home services, instead.

Gun- The UU one looks good. I wish there were more free curriculums out there, though.

Wow. I sit out a few days and its pages and pages of updates.

Maia - congratulations. & I agree - there are now rules. I spoke to some friends yesterday who have been married 30+ years. They don't know how they even got engaged. She was a nurse in Vietnam during the war, he was in the states. They sent cassette tapes back and forth. All they no is she came home to get married and they did. They can't find it mentioned on a tape and neither remembers asking the other one. I thought that was pretty funny.

Hugs to sickie little ones and big ones.

I've been busy getting ready for babe. This week is my last week at work, then I "officially" start maternity leave. Still trying to get the house in some semblense of order. My house is so chaotic right now. I have a really high clutter tolerance - but its too much. I'm just to tired to keep up and DS is too needy to let me get to things when I'm not tired. DH is great but I think he is stressing about the babe coming and tired from work stuff and he's just not keeping up either. It's not going to improve with a new born. I can't believe I'm now hoping she doesn't come before her due date. If she waits, I can have a week with 3 days at home with DS in day care. I can actually rest AND get things done. I would like to have her by Thankgiving though - mostly so I can have the stomach space eat lots of pie. So that is just a one-week window of my preferred birthing time - probably too much to really expect. She'll come when she comes.

Mostly at this point I need to go through a backlog of mail - from August!! All my bills are on auto-pay. So I check incoming mail for irregular bills like medical bills or other service providers and other important statements that I don't get electronically. Everything else goes in a box. Usually I go through the box at least once a month. Well - its been longer. My problem is it is 98% junk or completely redundant notices. I don't need 6 statements stating a bill has been sent to my insurance company within a 30 day period. Come on!! We got rid of our burn barrel last year - I wish i had it now. It is going to take me forever to shred this pile. I'll probably take it into my office where we have a heavy duty shredder - but it only does about 10 sheets at at time. I also need to be careful about the junk mail stuff - I once had a solicitation for a donation that had a nickle taped to it - the coin made it half-way through the shredder before jamming. It took me an hour to get it out. The nickle looks really cool though - half shredded.

Well it is 4 am - I think babe has stopped her 2 am dance session. Maybe I can go back to sleep for an hour before DS wakes. He still hasn't adjusted to the time change. URGH! It makes not sense in high latitudes to keep daylight saving time. In spring it makes the sunset at 9 instead of 8 pm - in winter 5 instead of 6 pm. What good is that. I miss having some evening sun - even if it would just be for another few weeks. We're already down to less than 8 hours daylight. Plus no snow to help light the night. Okay - that is my rant. I'm a really grumpy person at 4 am. I should keep to myself and not go online.
