I guess you deleted this, but I wanted to just say that yes, lots of children (in my and my friends' experience) seem to be able to verbalize the thoughts of others when they are very little. This seems to go away when they are about two-and-a-half or three; perhaps the loss of this ability coincides with the dawning of fuller self-awareness. Again, this is just my experience. I never would have believed that this could be true before I had my daughter (I am habitually very skeptical about this kind of thing, and had always assumed my mother was making it up when she told me similar stories about myself and my brother as little children), but it seems as though the mind of the child is broader than we can know or understand.
