Reading the agnosticism thread, it was interesting to see Yammer's discussion with a 5yo about what is religion.

What is it, anyway?

We all see religion through the prisms of our own beliefs.

As I see my own religion and beliefs, Judaism isn't interested in getting you to heaven. It's about elevating our lives here on earth. All of our rituals and religious particularities are about "spiritualizing" the mundane, bringing down light to this world, releasing the sparks of holiness in every aspect of creation, if you will. So to me, my religion is about how to make every aspect of my life G-d-filled.

I know that a central theme of Christianity is being saved, ie., going to heaven after leaving this life. Is that what the religion is about, preparing for the afterlife? Correct me if I'm wrong, please ...

My understanding of Islam is too paltry to begin to speculate, along with any other of the major religions.

So what is religion to you?

Just asking.

Great question, amyrpk! I think of "religion" as simply a set of rules and/or practices that are intended to draw one closer to the divine. Everyone has a spiritual nature and there are certain practices, such as meditation, rituals, chanting, etc. that arouse our spiritual sides. And certainly, having a set of reasonable rules helps us live better lives. Which is why I think there are so many religions, all of which are attractive and beneficial in a way to those that follow them.

The "religious" part of my relationship with God would include such things as communion, baptism, weddings, and attending church.
