I call myself an Atheist but my beliefs are also close to Secular Humanist. I have my own crazy set of beliefs but they don't include the belief in a higher power.

your beliefs sound close to mine (as you can see my sig says "namaste" which can mean many things but it seems to confuse most people when they hear me discuss atheism)
nice to meet you

I am going to go ahead and show my ignorance here but what does namaste mean ? Also in "finding your tribe" there is a thread for the atheist here. I'll go bump it up for you if I can. Nice to meet you too!!

thanks i go right over and look!
i have heard many a debate over what it can mean but here is the jist
NAMASTÉ - (Na-ma-stay) A Sanskrit word used as a salutation or blessing. Can be translated as "the divine in me honors and blesses the divine in you"

so you can see where it can be seen as religious and then again, seen as not religious

hmmmm, this is N O T an argument AT ALL- just curious about the definition of what a higher power is...like, is it any power stronger than one's self (say the sun, earth or a group of people)or is it a specific deity? I am certain Ive heard discourse between other individuals that call themselves athiest/agnostic, hang in there...I know yall are not alone!

I guess I would be an atheist. I do not believe in a higher power pulling strings or guiding me. I guess I would be a humanist. I think the John Lennon quote :" I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me" sums up my thoughts pretty well. I believe in me.

My mother hounds me about this with the " well, what happens when you die" questions to which I respond, " I have patients, I will wait and see".

There are things more powerful (the lack anything else to call it)than humans. Nature in general is a force stronger than I, or rather not one I myself can control. I do not believe a higher power/being create us and is in control of our destiny. I do not believe in a deity/ies.

We are out here!

In the upper right hand corner of this window you'll see some small rectangular buttons. One is search- it is a great feature. Try searching for some of our past conversations.

Welcome!!!
