Nearly 180 Department of Homeland Security weapons were lost -- some falling into the hands of criminals -- after officers left them in restrooms, vehicles and other public places, according to an inspector general report.

The officers, with Customs and Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, "did not always sufficiently safeguard their firearms and, as a result, lost a significant number of firearms" between fiscal year 2006 and fiscal year 2008, the report said.

In all, 243 firearms were lost in both agencies during that period, according to the January report from Inspector General Richard Skinner.

one of the officers left a gun on the back of his vehicle and drove off

How does one misplace a plane?

Though, not everyone can fly a plane...just about everyone can figure out how to shoot a gun. That's scary.

and they want to take mine away? Too funny. At least I know where mine are and I haven't left one sitting around in a public place.

Makes me wonder though...were they lost or sold for personal $$$ ?

I'm so glad I am secure in my homeland.

You'd be surprised at how many people put down weapons and leave them when they have to carry them around all of the time.

I've found a 9mm in a bathroom.That's a big place depending on the holster.

Want to know how many "Lost Weapon" e-mails I got during the 6 months in Afghanistan? At least one a week. "Weapon was last seen at the boardwalk/PX/chow hall"
