I know most of you aren't local to Florida, but please consider liking this Facebook page and getting involved with what's happening. Last week, my friend Karen tried to renew her membership at our local hands-on children's museum here in Jacksonville. She was told that despite having a membership for 3 years, she would have to pay an extra fee because her children have a second mom, not a dad. They said that they don't consider them a family and refused to give them a family membership because of this. Initially the museum said it wasn't because they were lesbians, but since then, a support page has been set up on Facebook which is trying to garner support for the museum and for the "traditional family." Karen's friends have started a boycott page, found here: https://www.facebook.com/BoycottTheHandsOnChildrensMuseumJacksonville?fref=ts
You can sign the petition here: http://www.change.org/petitions/hands-on-children-s-museum-of-jacksonville-stop-discriminating-against-families
Here is the museum's web site, if you would like to contact them via phone, fax, or snail mail: http://handsonchildrensmuseumjax.startlogic.com/
You can also contact their corporate sponsors--Olive Garden, Winn Dixie, Lowe's and Home Depot.
If you have a news contact anywhere, please be in touch. The story has been picked up by USA Today and a few other news outlets throughout the US but we really can't have too much media coverage for this. We are also organizing a protest during which we hope to have out-of-town-ers call the museum to reinforce our message. Please help us stand up for equality even down here in the Bible belt! Feel free to share with your friends as well!
