My favorite civil rights blogger drew my attention to this story. Apparently there was a mysterious death in Tuskegee, Alabama that local people fear might have been a lynching. He was African-American, his body was found hanging from a tree by his belt, and his shoelaces were tied together holding up his pants. This made people who saw the body think that this was not a suicide.

We here can make a difference by publicizing this story. The local police are leaning toward declaring this a suicide, and if there is no national attention, there won't be any follow-up investigation. So if you know of anyone who would be interested in this, feel free to send them the link!

Wow, I found no mention of the guy's name even today, either.

At the last ACLU lawyer's meeting I attended, someone mentioned a story about the tale of a co-worker who told a "joke": "How are an apple and a Black person alike? They both look good hanging from a tree." No one else seemed to be surprised, but frankly, I couldn't believe that anyone told "jokes" like that anymore. It's beyond sick to hear that honest-to-goodness lynching may still be continuing to this very day.
