I was very ticked about this ad when I first saw it (about 6 weeks ago, actually). There are subway/bus ads and a billboard in the Bronx. I and several other people have written letters about it to Bloomberg's office.
A friend mentioned that it was in response to two recent deaths in homeless shelters where people were unsafely co-sleeping, but I haven't confirmed that. If I find out that's true, I'll post back, since it might be good to include alternative ad options like talking about how to cosleep safely.
I think it's kind of odd that humans are the only species on the planet that can be brainwashed into thinking that sleeping the way nature intended is harmful...

Very true. Us humans sometimes let our thinking get in the way of our instincts.
homeless shelters? the mothers of these children were in homeless shelters and the staff ALLOWED those poor infants to die because there wasn't enough room to sleep properly and carefully?

NO CHILD SHOULD HAVE TO EVER SPEND A MINUTE IN A HOMELESS SHELTER! Are the Powers that be that inhuman? ARGH!!!
is this a typical tactic? - I was surprised to see that they seem to offer some practical advice about co-sleeping:
Quote:
Babies should never be allowed to sleep with anyone who:
• Is overweight.
• Has been drinking alcohol.
• Has used marijuana or other drugs, or has taken
medication that makes you sleepy.
• Is ill or extremely tired.
Though of course, they then go on to say "Always put your baby to sleep alone in a crib..."
I guess it sorta reminds me of Enfamil "feeding your baby" brochures giving BFing advice, and then going on to give lots and lots of formula-feeding advice...

I'm not sure I get what you're ranting at, though. Is it just that homelessness shouldn't happen? Or that people with babies shouldn't be allowed to shelter there? Or their babies should be taken away and given to foster care?

LOL! Seriously, good point. I always thought that rule was a little vague. Who sleeps while they are wide awake and alert :LOL I think the 'while not on drugs that make you drowsy' rule ought be sufficient.
