I am creating a mix CD for my best friend as a baby shower gift. There are some great songs out there about babies, children, and being a mom- but I only know a couple! what are your favorites? So far I will include:
"Zion" Lauryn Hill
"Speaking with the Angels" Dar Williams (from Cry, Cry, Cry )
Oh, and there's a song called "Child of Mine" by a male artist, folk style, that was sung to me once and I can't remember who it is! Anyone know?
'Baby of Mine' by Allison Krauss. It's a tear jerker.
Also, don't know the name of it, but Natalie Maines does a great song about her son on The Dixie Chicks 'Home' CD.
"I hope you dance" by Lee Ann Womack is a favorite of mine.
Some I like...
Teach Your Children Well by Crosby, Stills & Nash
Little Miss Magic by Jimmy Buffett
Butterfly Kisses by ? (kinda' played out but still makes me
We Are Gonna' Be Friends by The White Stripes
Godspeed by Dixie Chicks
Isn't She Lovely by Stevie Wonder
Father and Daughter by Paul Simon
*Zion by Lauren Hill is an AWESOME song!*
I absolutely LOVE that Built To Spill song that is all from the fetuses point of view... It is great, but I cannot, for the life of me, remember the name... It is on the Nothing wrong With Love album, though...
My ex's sister made me a mixed CD for my shower and put The Baby Sister song from the Talking Heads and a lot of old blues stuff... I'll try to dig it out and give you more ideas...
I have to add the song "In My Daughter's Eyes" by Martina McBride.http://www.martina-mcbride.com/main.shtml
(The lyrics are under Music, then scroll down to the latest album Martina and click on the song title.)
I get choked up everytime I hear it.
"Beautiful Boy" by John Lennon is one our favorites. Of course, we have a boy
These are so great! Keep 'em coming! My friend is having a boy, but we have a daughter, so of course I'm stoked to know about the little girl songs too. I can't believe i didn't think of some of these...
When You Dream by Barenaked Ladies
With Arms Wide Open by Creed (if it's not too heavy--I've heard an acoustic version that's nice)
Baby King by Marc Cohn
Just the Two of Us by Will Smith (about being a dad, but still good)
Wild World by Cat Stevens
I have the CD Mothers and Daughers by Rosemary Clooney and it is chock-full of great songs to sing to your child (boy or girl). Some of them include: Baby Mine, Always, That Face, The Best Gift, A Child is Only a Moment.
When DD was born, I got carried away and made 3 different cd mixes for her-fun songs, love songs and lullabies. I can't remember everything on them right now (it's in her room and she's sleeping), but off the top of my head:
Pretty Baby-Woody Guthrie
Sweet Baby James-James Taylor (I change the words and add her name!)
Shining Eyes-Red Grammer
That's all I can think of right now-I haven't listened to it in a while.
Oh and "Still Fighting It" by Ben Folds is an awesome song! Here are the lyrics:http://www.benfolds.org/lyrics/?track=3
This is a great thread and I totally plan to steal this idea!:LOL Here are some songs that we love
Godspeed : Dixie Chicks
Truly Scrumptious & You Two: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang CD
Feed the Birds: Mary Poppins CD
Baby Mine: Dumbo or Bette Midler
You Are My Sunshine
Jenny Rebecca : Olivia Newton John
I also really loved, and I hate to admit this the Dreamship: Lullabies for Little Ones by Kathy Lee Gifford
I think this is such a sweet idea
"Unconditional" by Willie Porter--the first verse chokes me up every time. '...She says I will always love you, no matter what may come. I carried you inside myself, the two of us are one. No matter how it falls out or comes undone, to me you will always be shining. And he stares into her brown eyes above, into the face of unconditional love.'
"Living Proof" by Bruce Springsteen--'Looking for a little of God's mercy, I found living proof.'
DH loves to burn CD's, so we have made a few mixes for ds. We even made some as party favors for his second birthday. So, some other songs to think about:
"I love..." by Tom T. Hall (I love love little baby ducks, bright red pick up trucks and you)
"Starfish and Coffee" by Prince
"Gigantic" by the Pixies
"Dreams of Love" by Buddy Holly
"Beat on the Brat" by the Ramones.
Learning to ride a bike by Jason Gay www.jasongay.com
What about 'Sympathy' by Sleater-Kinney? I haven't heard it so I can't say how hard it is, but I do know that Corin Tucker wrote it for her premie son...
I like Randy Newman's "Memo to My Son."
Here's a few more that I used on a mix CD for labor:
The Things We've Handed Down by Marc Cohn (VERY appropriate)
Golden Road by Martin Sexton
Angel Standing By by Jewel
Wildflowers by Tom Petty
Your Song by Elton John
Takes My Breath Away by Tuck and Patti
Watching Scotty Grow
by Bobby Goldsboro
yes, it's corny 1970's country, but you get this lyric:
|In four short years I've gone from rags to riches,
And what I did before that I don't know,
So let it rain on my windowpane, I got my own rainbow,
And we're sitting here shining watching Scotty grow.
it's also the tune used on The Simpsons
when Homer helps Bart build his soapbox derby car. tee hee hee
There's a song I heard once and have been trying ever since to find - it's by Connie Calder (Kalder?) and has a line about "with our babies in our arms". Anybody know it? It made me cry - and I didn't even have kids then!
Here's a few I like:
At Last (Etta James)
Sang this to my first baby all the time. Still get choked up.
"You smiled, you smiled---and then the spell was cast. Now
here we are in Heaven, for you are mine at last."
I Don't Want to Miss a Thing (Aerosmith)
"I could stay awake just to hear you breathing
Watch you smile while you are sleeping
While you're far away dreaming
I could spend my life in this sweet surrender
I could stay lost in this moment forever
Every moment spent with you is a moment I treasure . . ."
Ahh--gets me in tears every time.
I Need You (LeeAnn Rhimes)
You Belong to Me (Written by Pee Wee King, Chilton Price and Redd Stewart )
For Once in My Life
And there's one I am trying to think of--it is by a female country singer, I guess. It has the line "I want to wake up every morning to your sweet face . . .". I don't know the title, but I love it as sung to a baby!!
"Sweet Child of Mine" by Guns-N-Roses (I know, I know, but it IS a sweet song!)
"Asleep and Dreaming" by Magnetic Fields
Here are some of its lyrics:
"I've seen you laugh at nothing at all, I've seen you sadly weeping./ The sweetest thing I ever saw was you asleep and dreaming./ I don't know if you're beautiful, but it's not for me to judge./ I can't tell if you're beautiful, because I love you too much."
!!!!!!! (It's on the 69 Love Songs 3-CD set, which is all really incredible.)
"The One Who Knows" by Dar Williams
...hey mamas, just wanted to share a great tune that I was reminded of the other day, Lady Madonna by the Beatles:
Lady Madonna, baby at your breast, wonder how you manage to feed the rest
Indeed....much more challenging to feed my 2 1/2 year old than my 8 month old!
"Little Creatures" and "Up All Night" by the Talking Heads - on the same album too!
and how about "Cry Baby Cry" by the Beatles
These are pretty smarmy but I like the Celine Dion song "Because you loved me" and the Josh Groban song, "You lift me up".
"Joy" by Talib Kweli
He rhymes about how beautiful his wife is during during her pregnancies, how they used a midwife & describes the births, how he cried when they put his daughter in his arms. It's about how much precious joy his children bring him. In the background Mos Def (also a daddy) is saying "I know how ya feel, Kweli I know how ya feel..."
It's AWESOME hearing a daddy describe how joyous & wonderful children are. Now if only Outkast will do something like that...
its a old post here are some i thought of
Everywhere i go by lissie
