I agree. It was, uh, interesting to read when I was 16...but now sex isn't taboo anymore and I'm like "Seriously? I'm reading porn..." I've skipped each one in each book. I don't see the need. It doesn't REALLY contribute to the story. "They made love" or whatever works just fine, thank you.

Yes, Jondalar is annoying in this one. I mean, your girlfriend is gorgeous and then you get mad when guys are attracted to her? DH loves it when I get attention because it's a "yep, she's beautiful and she's MINE" sort of thing.

That being said...

Ranec is creepy to me. I mean, it's one thing to flirt (like some of the other men do) but his comments/behavior are outright sexual and not appropriate ESPECIALLY considering that she is obviously with someone. "Honor the Mother" and all...but is there no honor among the men? He gives me shivers when he talks to Ayla at her welcoming ceremony. (His comment about thinking of her when he feels the furs on his bare skin? Ick)
I meant to comment on this yesterday.

Ayla is a really, really remarkable woman. However, she has really crappy taste in men, imo. She seems to be way into the "intense" type, where "intense" translates as "obsessive, stalkerish and self-absorbed". I wouldn't take either of those guys on a silver platter...exept maybe for a brief romp in the furs...

IMO going with Jon was not a good move. The first guy of the Others that you've EVER met and you attach yourself totally to him? I know it's supposed to be "destiny" and whatnot...but seriously, if she were a friend of mine and he pulled that kind of behavior I'd tell her to run (not walk) and not look back.

This series is my "dirty little secret". I've read it three(?) times, but would be mortified if anyone knew I was reading it. I enjoy the historical fiction, the physical descriptions of ancient landscapes, her descriptions of culture. I have to breeze through the "pleasures", but it's not so much the pleasures that makes this my secret read. It's more the comic book heroine quality of Ayla. I'd be just as embarrassed to be caught reading a wonder woman comic.

No need for it to be a secret pleasure, because the only people who know that Ayla is a Superwoman character are other people who read the books.

The "pleasures" get tedious. Ayla's a little overdone, but Auel at least offsets it a little (not so much in SoS) with her diffidence and naivete. The relationship dynamics are the part that make me feel mildlly embarrassed to be reading it. "Oh, it wasn't rape on the glacier, because she wanted it, even though he didn't know she wanted it, and thought she didn't" and "I love her so much that I have to drag her across a whole continent, even though I know she's had many upheavals in her life, and risk her life, because I want to go home" and...blech.

While reading POP I found myself thinking, "Hmm...isn't it convenient that nothing ever happens to AYLA where she needs a knowledgeable healer?"

Psh, I've read it at least twice!

I remember that. With that one, again, it's a "well, it's convenient that they never needed anyone until someone was there."

I also think it reads like a TV series...Like, when DH first watched Dexter he commented, "Isn't it coincidental that these serial killers end up in a town with a serial killer that kills them? AND he works for the police?" The main characters are always where the action is at the moment.

She did need Iza when she was younger, too.

I totally agree with you, but the series would end pretty abruptly if Ayla were gored by a wooly rhino or something, so I can see why that nothing major ever happens to her.

Maybe in the new book something truly life altering will happen. As long as she dosnt kill off the horses, wolf, Jonayla or Jon I will be OK though. I cannot stand when books kill of main characters.

I was excited when I saw this thread; also have been reading the books for 20ish years.... then I saw book 6 is FINALLY coming! Whoo-hoo!

I actually got to meet JA at a lecture and book signing when #5 came out. She gave a pretty big spoiler of something in #6; if you want to know PM me... (might be common knowledge by now)

Someone mentioned one of their favorite scenes was the preemie in TMH... I'm a NICU nurse and I love that not only did Ayla invent domesticated horses, dogs, spearthrowers, sewing needles, etc etc etc, she also invented Kangaroo Care!!! I'm figuring the baby was 32 weeks at the eariest (more like 34); much earlier than that and the suck swallow reflex isn't good enough.

The scene that got to me the most is when she threw her carrying cloak in the grave (I'm crying even now as I write this but I'm a bit hormonal!). I think if my house was burning my babies' sling would be one of the first things I would want to save.

Anyone else wonder if Zelandoni has polycyctic ovaries? That was my 1st thought when I read SOS. Would explain the weight and infertility...

Thanks for making my day with this thread and the news!!!!!!!!!!!

I had thought about that a lot and also possibly a slight thyroid issue.

I want to know the spoiler type it in here and cover it with spoiler tags pretty please. To do that type [ spoiler] [/ spoiler] without the spaces in case you didnt know how.

I had thought that she would see all the people from her past via the spirit world including her son but I knew that it couldnt be in person. I expect her to be exceptionally gifted in that area after all she even saw into the future in COTCB so her abilities should be limitless.

Just wanted to say, I have been reading this thread because I was excited to see there was a new book, but I read the excerpt, and I have to say I was quite unimpressed. My problem with the books has always been the fact that Ayla is portrayed as being so perfect in every way...She is great at everything-sex, hunting, making leather/tools/fire/ training animals/contacting the spirit world/learning languages, etc, has exceptional physical attributes, is empathetic to the point that it makes me want to puke-she has no imperfections at all....Jondalar on the other hand, is a bit of a selfish jerk and has a hard time coming to terms with reality. He is also not the most empathetic of characters..I guess he is meant to make Ayla look even better.

Anyway, I will probably end up reading the book just to see what happens, but I had to say that I am sick of Ayla's perfection....and I was really turned off by the part where her excellent hearing/vision is mentioned yet again.

HI, I'm brand new here but love the site and the forum.  I loved COTCB and VOH, but the rest . . . .

Yes, hate reading about the "pleasures".  Yawn.  If I EVER have to read about Jon's p***s and how large he is and how great they fit (blah blah blah), I'm going to vomit into my own mouth.  And Ayla, for as perceptive as she allegedly is to nuance and body language doesn't get that he is jealous?  He is whiny and immature and emotionally stunted.  He seems to have nothing really going for him but his looks and his big ***k.

FInished reading the Painted Caves today and was tremendously bored and think it felt unfinished with where a couple of the main [bad] characters were left.  The detail in the books on the very boring Donier Tour was either exquisite or excruciating, depening on your point of view.

Glad this series is over - for a series that started with such promise, it really kind of disintegrated.

Think I'll stick with my beloved Diana Gabeldon and the Outlander series.

I did think the new book was a bit dull. There was a second there where I thought Ayla was going to invent the wheel. Mrs. Auel did so much re-capping that the story hardly moved along at all. It could have been so much more.
