The old thread is now closed so I am going to put this new link up for my pictures and drawings The Earth's Childrens Series Drawings & Models

I did have it through geocities but they decided to no longer do free hosting so I switched it to tripod. Sorry for the pop ups but tripod has them in abundance since it is a free web site place.

Yep some where definatly better than others. She does have a LOT of detail in her books something I usually love but she can be a bit over the top especially where "pleasures" are concerned

I skim over almost everything involving "pleasures"...or Ayla and Jondalar's relationship, really. He creeps me out, so I skip a lot of that. The only parts that interest me are the places where Auel is looking at their relationship from the standpoint of the cultural conflicts.

The introductions. Holy night I GET IT! It's a big deal to make sure everyone knows their kinship relations.

Can't we just say they went through the customary introductions, at least once we get to page 400? Please?

I am looking forward to the next book and hoping with all my might that it comes out this year. Then the year after the final book will be out. But I have my doubts because it takes her so long to write one and she is a very old woman now. that she makes it to finish the series.

I do hope she finishes it. They're really remarkable books in a lot of ways. I just wish I liked the central couple better. Ayla is a fascinating character, but I just don't like Jondalar. I think I like him less every book.

How cool. I had no idea that there were 2 more books. I read this series a long time ago, maybe 15 years? I generally don't like to read a story more than once (I already know the ending ) but maybe I'll do it for this series since it's been so long. I doubt I can remember enough to make sense of the new book without reading the old ones again.

And neat models and drawing MCat.

Ty it was fun to do. I have the books and I have them on cd as well. Every night since before my dd was born so 10+ years now I have been listening to those cd's to fall asleep to. I never get tired of them I sometimes actually crave going to bed and hearing them.

My favorite is VOH followed by POP. I havnt read the physical books in a long time though. I plan to again some day but it is kinda confusing listening to the cd at night then reading the same book later

That is the rumor about the 2 books but at least 1 more is for sure.

FTR she will be 74yo in February.

I worry if she'll finish the books too! I read somewhere that she gets really tied up in her research and having to know every little detail about something. Just write the story already!

I've been thinking about going through them again. Some of the books I've read once, most twice. They take a while to get through and I tend to need breaks.

According to wiki, the sixth book is now available for pre-order. I didn't realize the first three were published so much closer together than Pop and SoS...especially SoS.

I just re-read all the books so that I will have them fresh in my mind for the new one.

Love Ayla. Not always happy about Jondalar... he's kinda spoiled.

Ha, I think most of what I knew about sex at the age of 12 came from reading about their pleasures. I still kind of love this series. It's so interesting to me that every time I read a New York Times or National Geographic article about that time, it seems like Auel really got a lot of things right a couple decades ahead of the archeological finds.

2 More books? The last one I read was Shelters of Stone. Is that the most recent?

I find myself skimming a lot of the land detail or details on how to knap flint or whatever.

I've read them at least 3 times. The first is my favorite...but I love them all.

Shelters Of Stone is the last one published. There are supposed to be 2 more to finish the series out. Not sure it will happen but that Mrs. Auel lives long enough to make it happen.

I have them all on CD and there isnt a night that has gone by for the past 8 years that I dont have one of them playing (other than the nights when I was without cd player because I have worn out 3 )

I'd be okay with a ghost writer at this point. I REALLY want to know how the story ends!!!!

I hear that waiting so long between books has been hard and I do want to know how it ends and hope that the ending is how I picture it.

I want to see Ayla and Jondalar sitting around a fire surrounded by kids and grandkids while they tell stories of all their adventures. I also some how want Ayla to be able to see that Dirk is well and has had a great life. Either through a traveler or through the spirit world.

I would also like to see Ayla adopt a girl wolf pup and start the raising of domesticated dogs. The horses I think will definitely be a part of things to the end.

I'm in the middle of "The Mammoth Hunters" and had a few thoughts...

Yes, Jondalar is annoying in this one. I mean, your girlfriend is gorgeous and then you get mad when guys are attracted to her? DH loves it when I get attention because it's a "yep, she's beautiful and she's MINE" sort of thing.

That being said...

Ranec is creepy to me. I mean, it's one thing to flirt (like some of the other men do) but his comments/behavior are outright sexual and not appropriate ESPECIALLY considering that she is obviously with someone. "Honor the Mother" and all...but is there no honor among the men? He gives me shivers when he talks to Ayla at her welcoming ceremony. (His comment about thinking of her when he feels the furs on his bare skin? Ick)

Yeah Ranec has a major case of obsession not only with Ayla but with objects of art. He actually sees Ayla as an object of art I truly think his love for her isnt like you would think of love in the traditional sense but in the sense that he wants to "own" her and add her to his collection.

I can understand Jon's point of view in taking Ayla home and having all he has known and loved rejecting him again. He is the type of guy that has a hard time with not fitting in. For him it means everything to do so.

TMH is interesting in that it talks about other people besides the main characters but for me it isnt close to be a fav. of mine.

Yeah, it's not one of the better books IMO.

It also upsets me that Ranec blatantly takes advantage of Ayla when she's drunk. DH is military and during all of their sexual assault briefings it's made VERY clear that a person cannot properly consent to sex after drinking. It's considered rape in most cases...so yeah.

I can see the Jon and Ayla "not sure how to approach" conundrum. Lines get crossed really easily. I do wonder why Mamut never stepped in and explained to Jon what Ayla was really thinking (or encouraged her to do the same) because he LIVED with The Clan so he kind of gets it.

I often wondered the same thing but I am thinking that Mamut felt that it was important that they learn things the way they did for it to really matter. Like in the spiritual sense.

I find it really hard to believe that Mamut no matter how old forgot the time he lived with the Clan though.

My favorite parts in TMH are:
  1. When Ayla rides Baby that was kickin'
  2. The mammoth hunt
  3. The birth of the premi baby (I often wonder how premi she was maybe 30-32 weeks sounds about right maybe 34)
  4. When Ayla finds Wolf
I cant think of any other highlights that jump out at me right now.

It says that the baby was about a moon cycle too early...that's 6 weeks right? So about 32 weeks.

That was another one that felt dragged a bit...I find myself skipping most of the travel talk and only REALLY reading the bits where they find other people.

For me POP is my second fav. but your right it does go into exhausting detail about the surroundings. The first time I read it I enjoyed it the second time a little less and now eh who cares about grass

POP does have more action scenes which are really nice. Especially with the flash flood and the S'Armoni (sorry about the spelling to lazy to get up right now and look in the books for the proper spelling)

I also enjoyed the scene with the musicians at the Summer Meeting. It wasn't a huge scene, but it really stuck in my memory.

This. This. This.
However, I'd honestly rather read about the grass than the sex scenes. I think Auel goes overboard on those, anyway, and it's especially noticeable in PoP.
