I found a few threads about this but they're pretty old, and I thought I'd start a new one. I'd like to download a bunch of Christmas music to our ipod, and obviously can download from our old CDs, but am looking for other suggestions/new ideas. If people could post their suggestions of songs/artists/albums that they love to listen to during the Holiday season, that would be great! I have had wonderful luck finding books and movies that I've enjoyed via suggestions on this forum, and anticipate that we could have a wonderful thread of music suggestions, too.
This is the thread which had the most responses when I searched, with Christmas music suggestions:
My favorites are:
"New Years Day" - U2 (not necessarily thought of as a Holiday song but *I* think of it that way)
"The Christmas Song" - Nat King Cole
December (album) by George Winston - especially his version of "Carol of the Bells."
Anything Bing Crosby
"Winter Wonderland" by Rosemary Clooney (the new version, where she's tweaked it for an older couple)
"Marshmallow World" by Dean Martin
I used to work at a store which played the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas CDs on loop through the whole holiday season. I therefore really disliked them -- but suspect I might like them now, after 15+ years of not having to listen to them.
...I *loathe* every version of "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" that I've ever heard. I don't know why, but I really dislike that song!
On XM, I prefer the "Holiday Traditions" channel ....
I think it would be especially interesting to discuss which artist's versions of various songs we prefer.
I've always loved John Denver and The Muppets Christmas CD. Or 8-track if you want accuracy since that's what I first listened to it on. I also like some Harry Connick Jr. And for untraditional I love The 12 Pains of Christmas. "Christmas With A Kick" is a great cd I picked up at Restoration Hardware a few years ago that I really like.
I love these Christmas songs:
Song For A Winter's Night by Sarah McLachlan
Amid the Falling Snow by Enya
River by the Indigo Girls
and for something a bit different:
Don't Eat the Yellow Snow by Frank Zappa
About 2 decades ago, I enjoyed the Vince Guaraldi Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack. Now it gets overplayed. I still like it, just not so often.
Putumayo's Christmas Around the World has some lovely music
For contemporary music:
The Barenaked Ladies Christmas album, Barenaked for the Holidays, is fun.
Elton John's Christmas Party has some good songs and some awful (Jingle Bell Rock, blecch)
For gorgeous traditional music, I like the Choir of King's College in Cambridge, England singing Christmas Carols. And so does everyone else around here, lol. That CD keeps disappearing because everyone takes it in the car or to the office or to holiday parties.
And can't forget Fairytale of New York by the Pogues (not exactly pc or appropriate for children though).
I really love Our Favorite Things.
And for fun and funky and girly, the Shedaisy Christmas album, Brand New Year, is pretty neat too.
My mom & aunt swear by The Carpenters Christmas Portrait.
R~Mama to my sweet A 7//07 & bubbly Z 3/12
AND due 9/13
I used to love listening to the Beach Boys Christmas album. Still do
"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter" ~~ MLK
I raelly enjoy Jewel's rendition of "O Holy Night".
If you're looking for something else, Andrew Allen's "I Wanna Be Your Christmas" is popular with my whole family, except maybe dh.
That's all I've got. I hate recommending music, books, etc., because everyone's taste is so different.
Oh - and Trans Siberian Orchestra. I love them.
Lisa, lucky mama of Kelly (3/93) , Emma (5/03) , Evan (7/05) , & Jenna (6/09)
Loving my amazing dh, James & forever missing Aaron Ambrose (11/07)
I like medieval and early modern Christmas music so here are my pics:
Baroque Christmas by Boston Camerata's
A Ceremony of Carols, By Britten, Poulenc, Respighi
An International Christmas by Grace Church Children's Choir and Amor Artis Chamber Choir
Christmas Vespers by Jon Banks and the Monks of Saint Frideswide (Medieval)
Christmas Meditations by Magdala (Medieval)
For standards the London Symphony Orchestra's Glory of Christmas is good. I also second Vince Guaraldi's Charlie Brown Christmas.
Thanks for all the suggestions!
I thought I'd share some of the more obscure songs I bought (just got it all loaded tonight):
We Three Kings (Blackmore's Night) - medieval style and very nice
The Christmas Song (Raveonettes)
Gettin' Ready for Christmas Day (Paul Simon, brand new, lyrical and nice)
Christmas Song - Dave Matthews
Peace - Norah Jones
Only You Can Bring Me Cheer - Allison Krauss
Christmas Cookies - George Strait (I'd forgotten how funny it is)
Go Tell it On the Mountain - Mahalia Jackson
Barenaked Ladies: Elf's Lament, Jingle Bells, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
O Little Town of Bethlehem - Sara McLachlan
Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella - Chris Thile (instrumental, with mandolin, a little bluegrassy)
Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) - U2
Away in a Manger (John Denver)
....I also got Harry Connick Jr.'s albums, and Rosemary Clooney's most recent Christmas CD (the one with the tree on the cover). And several others mentioned above (Indigo Girls, Carpenters, etc.). Thanks for all the suggestions!
itunes doesn't have "Happy Holiday" with Eydie Gorme -- which is one of the sappy ones I remember fondly from childhood. But it's on amazon for mp3s.
I got a lot of other more traditional/known songs, but those were the unique ones I found that I still liked. The Raveonettes song I really, really like!
Songs of Angels: Christmas Hymns and Carols by Robert Shaw Chamber Singers
99 most essential Christmas Masterpieces- various artists ( Amazon has it for download for 1.99 right now)
Christmas Gregorian Chants by CantArte Regensburg
Tchaikovski: The Nutcracker by Orchestra of the Kirov Ballet, St Petersburg and Valery Gergiev
Winters Knight by Nox Arcana
A Victorian Christmas Revels by the Christmas Revels
Christmas with the Rat Pack
The Christmas Song album by Nat King Cole
Mistletoe and Wine by The Mediaeval Baebes
Harry Connick Jr's Christmas albums
For kids: Disney's Family Christmas Album
Ding Dong Merrily on High by Chanticleer,
O Come, O Come Emmanuel by Enya
Not Christmas per se, but I just heard this song on a Starbucks ad and sleuthed 'til I found it - I think it's a nice seasonal song that might go into my Christmas song rotation:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8r2mz7TBCF8 (Snow Day by Matt Pond PA)
I might add this one too:
What? No Bing or Elvis? Too obvious and cliche? I love nothing better than singing in my best Elvis voice "I-I'll ha-ave a-a Blue Christmas with-out yoooooou/ A-and I-I'll be Bluuue jus' thinkin' about yoooou...... and I'll have a Blue Blueblueblue Christmas....." And I adore Bing Crosby, even though the Christmas music tends to be his most bland. Something about those low low voices. I like listening to my parent's old Reader's Digest Christmas collection (OK, not something you can download, sorry.....) and while Perry Como kinda sucks on this, Eydie and Doris are radiant.
Give me a few minutes while I caffeinate.
I like Bing Crosby!
I also love the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer soundtrack, the Nutcracker Suite, December by George Winston, and Marshmallow World (or mostly anything by the Ronettes or Phil Spector bands)
A very cheesy part of me loves "Hey Santa" by Carnie Wilson, "All I Want for Christmas is You" by Mariah Carey, and "My Only Wish" by Britney Spears --- but these are taken directly from teenage memories of working at the mall during Christmas, so please don't take me too seriously on them!!!
Oh, and I know it's not a Christmas song, but Auld Lang Syne always hits a chord for me.
And even though it's not at all a Christmas song, "Hallelujah" by Rufus Wainwright has a strong Christmas feeling attached to it for me.
Happy housewife and SAHM to a beautiful 3 year old DD and a July 2012 DS! Married to my best friend since 9/5/07 .
I love to , , and . We and whenever possible.
