i am looking for a book for my sister, who is about to turn 13—something she can turn to for inspiration, to be encouraged to listen to her conscience, and to help her make good choices. something from a female perspective would be great. spiritual perspective is good but not necessary. (i know this is very vague and general, but i figured it's worth asking.)
when i was her age i had a great group of friends, and we also had the punk music scene, self-published zines, this type of thing to inspire us when we were confused. where she lives in a rural area, she does not have ready access to bookstores to browse for herself, to seek resources. also, she finds many people at school are not making good choices, and even "religious" kids are not practicing the good choices required by their faiths.
[out of curiosity i read "do hard things" by Alex & Brett Harris, but it was not what i wanted.]
Chicken Soup for the Soul - Teens Talk Middle School
Chicken Soup for the Girl's Soul: Real Stories by Real Girls about Real Stuff
Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul
*There are several others in this series too, but these are the ones I have used and recommended to my teen clients and with my teen girls.
33 things every girl should know: Stories, songs, poems and smart talk by 33 extraordinary women by Tanya Holden
Be true to yourself: Daily meditations for teenage girls by Amanda Ford
Don't sweat the small stuff for teens by Richard Carlson
Ophelia Speaks: Adolescent girls write about their search for self by Sara Shandler
The girl's book of wisdom: Empowering, inspirational quotes from over 400 fabulous females.
thanks for these suggestions. Holland73, i'll have to take your list to a bookstore and explore.
rebeleducation—i loved The Red Tent! had not thought of that as a suggestion for my sister. time for a re-read, i think.
