this thread evolved from the 1001 books you must read before you die thread.

many of us believed that the list was seriously lacking and in all of it's one thousand and one titles, did not contain some of our faves.

we've decided to make our own list. please post your faves (i'll update this original post as they come in). once we collect all 1001 (it won't take that long, i promise), we can begin the challenge (reading every book on the list, of course). it's ok if your choices are also on the original list (it includes some really good ones).

novels only please (someone can start a best memoirs, non-fiction, collected stories, etc list somewhere else).

here's a link to the original post... http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=918251

:

i'm also keeping track of non-novels, so if a memoir or a book of short stories is among your list of faves, please include those as well (they just won't be added to this list).

btw - we've already reached 100 - told you it'd go quick (hurry up to get your picks included).

sahds and jane, i added your picks to the top. that list is getting mighty long. i love it!

went to a used book sale at a local library over the weekend (i usually go to two a month). just love all the great books you can find (for around 25 cents each -- YIPPEE!)

wanting to acquire the books that people have been mentioning (that i don't already own). here's what i got (some from this list, some from the original 1001 books list and some others thrown in to keep things interesting)...

pride and prejudice – jane austen
dandelion wine – ray bradbury
don quixote – cervantes
the hours – michael cunningham
house of sand and fog – andre dubus
the memory keeper’s daughter – kim edwards
middlemarch – george eliot

far from the madding crowd – thomas hardy
tess of the d’urbervilles – thomas hardy

the dead zone – stephen king
animal, vegetable, miracle – barbara kingsolver
prodigal summer – barbara kingsolver
moby dick – herman melville
rabbit redux – john updike
the time machine – h.g. wells

and all for under $6 -- how exciting! there's nothing more satisfying than that (well, almost nothing ).

I really enjoyed the Time Machine, but I'm a big fan of this type of literature, it somewhat reminds me of CS Lewis work.
I liked the Secret LIfe of Bees, and I kinda liked Memory Keeper's Daughter.
I think that all 3 of them deserve their place on our list, and I didn't read the rest. Let me know how it works out.

Love in the Time of Cholera - Gabriel García Márquez
Beloved - Toni Morrison

The Color Purple - Alice Walker (this must already be on there, right?)
The Time Traveler's Wife - Audrey Niffenegger
Steppenwolf - Herman Hesse
Still Life with Woodpecker - Tom Robbins

The God of Small Things - Arundhati Roy
Invisible Man - Ralph Ellison

you absolutely MUST (yes i said must) read a clockwork orange. i wouldn't call it scary. it's one of my all time faves. if you've seen the movie and hated it, i urge you to read the book.

also, i know we're only talking about novels here, but i also highly recommend anthony burgess' two volume autobiography. the first part, little wilson and big god, is superb and the second half, you've had your time is almost as good.

Okay, now, I finally went through the whole OP and it's lost all credibility. Sorry, OP.

Melville. "Moby Dick." I would strongly discourage reading that during your lifetime. The perpetuation of the canard that this book is excellent reading makes me nuts.

Of course, the story is great. It's just the book that sucks. So rent the movie.

Umm, perhaps you weren't following what's going on, but this list came from all other moms here. If you disagree with the list, don't read the books. Everything is subjective, feel free to disagree. Or perhaps a contribution of your own list will be helpful.

By the way, Moby Dick movie sucks.

Yes, keep reading! It can be a little tricky at times because the story jumps around in time, but it is well worth following it. I loved this book and it stuck with me for a long time after reading it. I read it with my previous book club and most everyone really enjoyed it, even some of the women who were normally very hard to please.
