Humph. I was going to say Sam and his dad, but you said it wasn't a parent/child relationship. I was going to say Sam and Rosie, which would fit the answer of 'debatable' familial relationship, but you said they were same gender.

So my only remaining guess is Bilbo and one of his many cousins, but I can't think of any of their names at the moment. So I'll pose it this way -- is one of the people in the relationship, Bilbo Baggins?
