I know CrunchyDaddy, among others of us, have been talking about how this would be a great alternative to big expensive AAC devices.

Here's a quote from their web site:

Proloquo2Go™ is a new product from AssistiveWare that provides a full-featured communication solution for people who have difficulty speaking. It brings natural sounding text-to-speech voices, up-to-date symbols, powerful automatic conjugations, a default vocabulary of over 7000 items, full expandability and extreme ease of use to the iPhone and iPod touch.

Anyone want to try it out and report back?! It's $149.

(I have no connection to this company. I thought it would be of general interest here.)

That is very cool - I was wanting something similar too.

Gosh, I feel so out of touch with technology some days though. iPod Touch 2G is an MP3 player with a touch screen? Could I for example set it up so Juju could select icons that would play music or a movie for him? I think he would really enjoy something like that. He likes to look at my cellphone and for me to play the ring tone selections for him.

That's awesome!! Wow, a high tech communicator for $150 (plus the cost of the iPhone and cell service) - that's a pretty great deal. I'm interested to hear how well it works.

Oops. Just realized I meant ShaggyDaddy, not CrunchyDaddy. Which isn't really very much the same name. Is there even a CrunchyDaddy?

I have actually been looking at this, the iPhone is a decent platform, unfortunatly the speaker is insufficient, so you can't really get by with JUST the device, an add-on speaker is not hard to find, but not a perfect solution.

The issue that the current implementation Proloquo2Go has is that they license their text to speech engine, so they cannot provide a trial version at all. Although an entry point of 199 (iTouch)+179 is really a lot less prohibative than almost any other AAC solution.
