Where can I get my dd tested for dyslexia? She gets good grades in school( she struggles terribly) so, the school won't do it. I don't know the first place to start looking for help.

Mom to three girls 14, 11, 9, and 1 more Girl on the way 8/8/2010!

If you request it in writing, the school should do it.

They do not have to offer services if she does not qualify and/or they have not gone through interventions, but they usually have to test students if parents request it.

They would do a cognitive test and academic testing most likely. Some very bright kids w/ learning disabilities do OK in school because they learn to compensate to make up for weak areas.

Other options would be through a private edcuational psychologist and/or a learning center (dyslexia clinic, academic tutoring location, etc.) it is expensive.

Also, some college campuses with Education and/or Psychology students do *free* or cheap testing to learn. The results may not be as accurate since they are students and still learning how to administer tests, but could give you an idea.

Here is the legal statement concerning parents that want testing for a student:

"A State educational agency, other State agency, or local educational agency [school district] shall conduct a full and individual initial evaluation ... either the parent of a child, or a State education agency, other State agency, or local educational agency may initiate a request for an initial evaluation to determine if the child is a child with a disability." 20 USC 1414(a)(1)
