Some may remember my massive bullet list, below are some highlights. Ds (6) had a very difficult year in K, was suspended twice and had ISS five times. His K teacher had talked about the gifted program early on but his behavior issues seemed to push that aside.

We saw a therapist for the latter half of the school year which consisted chiefly of trying different dicipline approaches. Met with an OT a few weeks ago, don't have the report yet but she did mentions she saw signs of Asperger's. We are on the waiting list for a developmental ped at a hospital clinic but there is a 9mo-12mo wait.

This past weekend we were at a family party and he found matches no one knew existed and went to an upstairs bathroom to use them behind closed doors; says he was trying to light a candle. Whole family is in uproar, except ds who "knows" he did something wrong but doesn't seem to "feel" it (not unusual); ds was always the one who needed to be watched closely but now we can't seem to let him out of sight in someone else's home.

Fortunately we were able to get an appointment with a child psychiatrist before school starts; we got him into a charter school focused on his intrests (science and tech), I hope we can change things enough that he'll be able to stay once he starts.

  • Doesn’t appear to be internally motivated to behave or follow societal rules.
  • Lack of impulse control.
  • Doesn’t exhibit a sustained response to positive or negative reinforcement—lives in the moment.
  • Understands the difference between right and wrong – will hide a ‘wrong’ behavior to avoid detection.
  • Has trouble focusing on tasks that are not of particular interest to him.
  • Appears to lack empathy.
  • Sometimes has difficulty understanding that something is a joke or may take a sarcastic comment literally.
  • Appears to lack empathy.
  • Difficulty maintaining eye contact.
  • Often speaks about others instead of ‘to’ them within their hearing.
  • Has unusual facial expressions. Is preoccupied with only one or few interests. Difficulty maintaining eye contact.

  • Is preoccupied with only one or few interests.
  • Breaks an object to “test” if it is breakable.
  • Will ‘experiment’ on his sister or a friend to see if something hurts.

Well, she is diagnosing ADHD and can't give an answer on Asperger's yet. We're starting ds on Concerta and hoping he doesn't have side effects--very nervous about that.
