Ds is 7, in 2nd grade.  He has SPD and is very intelligent.  He has difficulties with attention and impulsivity, and he comes out high on an ADHD checklist, although I'm not sure that's the all that's going on.  We've questioned gifted + SPD and/or ADHD, or PDD-NOS. We have signed paperwork for a school evaluation, although they will likely not find anything to verify him for services without an outside diagnosis.

I was planning to take him to a developmental pediatrician, but I'm not very impressed with the peds in town, the checklist diagnostic method (not sure whether they go deeper than a checklist), nor the fact that they all seem to be extremely pharmaceutical-based and I'm not ready to go there at this point.  I found a psychologist who specializes in ASD/ADHD/gifted (who can also start the process sooner than the dev'l ped can). Will it just be redundant to go with a psych to help with a diagnosis?  Should I do school, outside psych, and ped?

Though ds' ADHD was initially diagnosed by a psychiatrist, we did an evaluation at a special clinic that included a developmental-behavioral ped/speech language pathologist/social worker. It was a 3hr appointment that included (performance IQ – TONI 3, verbal SIT-R, Achievement/ability [WIAT II – word reading, reading comprehension, spelling, numerical operations]), a previous eval from an OT, teacher reports on the implementation/outcome of 504 accommodations, and all the bubble sheet surveys; his file was about 3 inches thick when we did the results appointment which also ended up being about 3hrs. They did talk briefly about medication but the clinic is for diagnostics and referred out for treatment. There is an element of redundancy (the school eval currently happening is similar to the hospital but without an MD) but each eval was approaching the situation from different perspectives.

"It should be a rule in all prophylactic work that no harm should ever be unnecessarily inflicted on a healthy person (Sir Graham Wilson, The Hazards of Immunization, 1967)."
