I'm just wondering if anyone here has kids on the spectrum who attend a Reggio Emilia or inquiry based school? Our 4.5yo begins school in January 2014 (we're in the southern hemisphere) and until diagnosis, we had always intended to send him to a Reggio school. We have done Reggio playgroup for years and his kindergarten is play based and loosely Reggio inspired. When we received his diagnosis one of our biggest points of grief was that Reggio wouldn't be a good educational fit for him - busy, loud multi-age classrooms etc etc.

But now, his psych has said that if we can work hard on his sensory stuff in the next 6 months, and ensure that the school is on side with working out the right structure/flexibility balance, then she wouldn't be too concerned about Reggio. I still have concerns, but so want this that I'm having trouble not making an emotional decision.

Anyone have any insight?

One gorgeous solstice babe 12/08, two smitten mothers - mothering consciously with conscience and compassion. Birth & Postnatal Doula. Student Midwife. Expecting #2 November '12.

I'm curious about this too but have no answers as we're a few years behind you (looking at 3yo preschool for this fall), and very interested in what people may have to say. One question: How did he do in the play-based, loosely Reggio inspired kindergarten? Did that seem to be a good fit for him?

I haven't found RI classroom a to be particularly loud. Busy, yes, but not usually loud.

The schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy, are inclusive and a good RI program would be, as well. Feel free to join the Reggio Google Group and ask any questions you may have.
