So we are back from another appt with the DAN! Dr. Kearnan is doing soooo well but he has some behavior issues still, and we are afraid that alot of them are now more habit than necessity. Dr M recomended we look for some ABA for him, but I am at a loss as to how to get it. Does medicaid cover ABA? How do I find a good therapist? We were very lucky with ST and OT, we have a wonderful center in the area that handles OT, ST and PT for children with all kinds of special needs. But they don't do behavioral therapy. And combined with all of the supplements and other needs the SSI money isn't going to stretch far enough to cover therapy too. So does anyone have any experience in this area?

I don't know a whole lot about ABA and the like but I do know of someone that had ABA covered by First Steps. Do you have this program in your state??

I'm not sure what first steps is. We do have Early intervention, but that cuts out at 3 and Kearnan is 5.5 now. We did get behavioral therapy orignally through them, but the school refused to continue it after he aged out. Now we have been left trying to figure it all out since.

I've never heard of medicaid covering ABA. Is a home program possible for you? I know some programs that the parent has run, although statistics show that ABA with the parent as therapist is less effective than a ABA with hired therapists. You might also try RDI, Floortime, or TEAACH - all of those are designed to be done by parents, and I know some who have had good success with them.
