Hi.

My son James (ds2) had his first grand mal seizure today. He was a little tired this morning, had a great afternoon at school, came home and was playing in the yard, and when I looked over he was sputtering and shaking. I gave him diastat and called 911, and when the parametics were here he had another seizure. They stopped that with versed. Then in the emergency room he inhaled some vomit or blood (nobody noticed it was so crazy), and that stopped his breathing and stopped his heart. They did compressions for three minutes and got him going again.

He's on a breathing machine now, and they've put him in a low-temp comatose state to help his brain heal. We're struggling with clotting (he also has a bleeding disorder). His head CT was clear (no bleeds). They're going to do an EEG to see if he's having seizures underneath the coma. Several doctors have said things look as good as they can, and that he might make a full recovery. They all say we need to wait to see if the MRI shows brain involvement (swelling as a reaction to oxygen deprivation). They say we should be hopeful.

I never knew what it was like....to be standing there watching my son's heart stop, see them doing compressions on his little body. This has been a horrible day. And just yesterday, when everyone had a good night's sleep and good behavior/participation at school....just yesterday (!) I was thinking "life is really good right now. I wonder how long it will last this time." 24 hours, apparently.

I'm babbling. Anyway, I was just wondering if you could send all your positive energy to my little James right now. He has so many challenges, he needs to triumph over this one. He needs to pull through. So if you can, please focus on him for a while and ask for a full recovery.

They're going to keep him at a low temperature, paralyzed, for about 48 hours they said. We'll know more when we get the MRI.

Thank you.

My heart sank when I read about your son. How terrifying that must have been, and still is. Sending prayers. I can't imagine what you must be feeling. Know that so many care for your family.

They just did rounds at the hospital, and they're going to keep James in the low-temp coma for another 24 hours, then bring him out of it slowly and see how he responds. Right now they're worried about his heart and some pulmonary edema--they think the left side of his heart was weakened by the trauma, and that maybe there's fluid in his lungs because of it. But over all, things are pretty calm. It's another 24 hours of sitting and waiting, and then we see how well our little James has pulled through.

I'm a nervous wreck. I keep thinking about how this could have happened at night, and we would have lost him. And then I start wondering if he's really "in there" or if he's gone already and we don't know it. The doctors say I should stay positive, but I'm full of fear.

Time to put our youngest to sleep, and then I can go in and spend some time with James (dh is there right now). And by the way, I could NOT have a better partner when it comes to this kind of thing. He's amazing.

Thank you for all the prayers and thoughts.
