My son - 2.5 - has been limping for the better part of a week. I thought it was new winter shoes. He has also been crawling a lot which I attributed to the baby begining to move around. Just to be on the safe side I had his PT check him out. She didn't find anything but noticed the limp and said to bring him to the doc. Well - this morning he started with fever - 102. The doc was very worried and was scaring me to death. We did a blood draw and then went for xrays (in the docs office he refuse to put weight on it). The xrays didn't show anything.

We have to go back tomorrow for more bloodwork (today's came back fine which doesn't make me feel any better). If it is fine then we will wait and see - if it changes then we will be admitted to Childrens.

I am so freaking scared. MOre so than the immediate admission from the ER at 4.5 months old, more so than his surgery more so than anything.

Please please just keep him in his thoughts and lets just hope this is something that will pass. The doc seems to think it may be an infection in his hip but said that we need to rule out all of the scary stuff first which she didn't elaborate on.

Ugh - I want to cry.

My sister had a virus that settled in her hip joint when she was young (my mom found out after my sister was crying and limping, and she also had a fever associated with it). She was hospitalized briefly, and made a full recovery...pretty quickly, too, from what I remember.

Viral infections settling in areas of the body don't happen to everybody, but it does happen a lot.

Thank you. The virus doesn't sound so scary now!!! The doc was pretty concerned because he had a staph infection on his finger a few weeks ago but I guess the bloodwork put her mind at ease for that. It just sucks because I know for him to say "ow" it has to really hurt. He has a pretty high tolerance - doesn't cry for shots, falls and scraps his knees and doesn't even wimper.......tomorrow can't come fast enough.

Big hug to you and your son.

In love with Dh since 1998. We created Ds (7.1.03), Dd (10.16.06) and Dd (3.16.09).

I hope it is just Toxic Synovitis.

If you look at my previous posts, DD has CP and was given that dx a few months ago because we took her to the ER because her gait got incredibly worse seemingly overnight. For her, the situation is way different and it is obviously something very different than what you are facing.

They will likely tell you that he has Toxic or Transient Synovitis. It sounds a lot scarier than it really is.

Toxic Synovitis will go away within 10 days. The best way to treat it is with rest and ibuprofien. It will not harm them or cause any long term problems.

In a way, I wish that DD actually did have Toxic Synovitis instead of what we are facing.

Thank you for the info. Today his bloodwork was even better than yesterday so I'm breathing a HUGE sigh of relief (the words "malignancy" came out of her mouth the other day). Unfortunately - the stupid xray technitians didn't even xray his hip yesterday! Morons. They did his lower leg but not his hip which is the one thing we were worried about. He was showing obvious pain today when the doc was tweaking it around. Monday she is going to call the radiology department at Childrens and see what is the best way to get a good look at his hip. She said he may need an MRI --- but so far she is thinking it is the toxic thing - she said it happens after an upper respiratory infection and he got over bronchitis a few weeks ago.

The only thing that worries me is that KS 'can' have autoimmune issue with it so I'm hoping this isn't the begining of something more. But I can't worry about what isn't there.

So far so good though. I guess we'll know more on Monday.

For those that have experienced it - is it normal for it to hurt worse after sitting for a period of time and to differ in pain throughout the day?

It sounds like he is in good hands. And it's nice to know I'm not the only that feels like being a mommy is sometimes like playing Worse Case Scenerio.

I'm glad it's sounding better, and hope they pinpoint the cause soon.

From what I have read about it, it is VERY normal for the pain to vary through the day. Getting up after resting is more painful.

Ibuprofien and rest are the best ways to treat it.

Just an update....the doc decided not to send him in for any more testing. She spoke to the radiologist who actually read the xrays and said that it was all clear so she said just to watch him. He is acting much better today but he is still extremely irritable and crying for longer periods of time. But he seems on the upswing. I did post a question to the KS website and the specialist kind of monitors the site...well - she email me yesterday and wants to talk about his hip. Now SHE has me worried!LOL! Never ends does it?
