So, a little background to make the story funny... we are teaching dd signs for please, thank you, etc, she is 13 months. She also has a vesicostomy, which is a urinary diversion through her abdomen. I hope this doesn't offend anyone, but I thought it was both funny and wonderful.

We were checking out at the grocery, and dd wanted a snack. I asked her to say please and thank you, which she did with her signs. The kid bagging for us said "cool trick! does she know any other tricks?" I simply smiled (although very miffed at the implication she was a puppy) and handed over my money. Ds (4yrs) said, "she can do lots of cool tricks! She can walk and say please, and she can even pee out of her belly button!" He was so excited and proud! I laughed until I could hardly stand up, then told the guy it was a long story as I quickly left.

I just love that ds sees her as "cool". It made my day. I don't think I have ever been prouder of either one of them. Isn't it funny how the littlest things bring you the most joy?

What's so great about that story is that your ds accepts your dd as normal, he doesn't see her vesicostomy as anything "weird" or "gross", but instead kind of cool but normal. Right in line with her walking, which is a "normal" thing to do. Kids can be so wonderful!!!

I know a little girl here whose brother has severe CP and is in a wheelchair. When she introduces someone to him she says "this is my brother ___, he can't walk so he has a cool wheelchair, but his brain is just like your's and mine." I just love that it's so "normal" to her!!!
