A good friend of mine has triplets - 2 boys and 1 girl. I just found out the 2 boys are identical (you'd think I would know but they wear their hair differently, 1 has glasses, etc.). I was wondering how common this was.

I've seen (online, on blogs) quite a lot of quadruplets that have an MZ twin set. I think it must be sort of common because many higher-order multiples are IVF, and they don't implant that many embryos for IVF anymore, so you're not going to get higher-order multiples unless one of the embryos splits, yk?

I've met several people with spontaneous triplets, and this is often how they occur: what started out as dizygotic twins becomes triplets when one of the zygots spits into identical twins.

Wild!

I read somewhere when I was pregnant that this is actually the most common combination for triplets, but I can't remember the source. IRL, all the triplets I know are either MZ or trizygotic, but I only know half a dozen sets.

Some forms of assisted reproduction increase the likelihood of splitting, so there are definitely many sets of triplets from two embryo IVF transfers.

The only higher order multiples have been that way. Odd, I know...but that is just how it has been.

I know three sets of triplets personally, and two of them are this way. Interestingly, they're both 2 MZ boys and 1 girl. The other set is trizygotic as a result of clomid.

Yup it's very common. I know one set like this, mz girls and their bro is dz to them. Most of the trips I know are all TZ though, however I have also read that the mz/dz combo is the most common of all trip combos. They're a miracle no matter how they're classified!

This is exactly what happened to my cousin. They weren't TTC and boy did they get a big surprise. The boys are identical and they have a sister. Crazy!

I think it's pretty common. I have a friend with quads via IVF, but she only had three implanted, and one split.

Yes, I know several people who have a monozygotic pair within their triplets, after implanting 2 embryos for IVF.

We have friends with spontaneous triplets, and this is the case with them, too. A pair of DZ twins (b/g) and one of the zygotes split so there's a MZ pair.

Within the first two weeks.

Splitting later than about 13 days after conception results in conjoined twins. Splitting within 2 days of conception leads to identical twins that don't share placentas, or any other supporting structures in utero. So, identical twins that were known to be identical from ultrasounds split between 2-13 days.

Our set of identical twins have their own placentas & amnion & chorion so they must have split early.....we did a 3 day transfer from our fresh ivf cycle, with assisted hatching on all 3 embryos, so they split sometime after 3 days
