For newborns, we went through 160 prefolds a week (so divide by how often you want to wash, plus some to wear while washing) and had 6-8 covers.

Now we have 14 covers and use about forty diapers (between prefolds and grovia inserts). (nighttime we double diaper, and nighttime covers *always* need to be washed).

On the newborn front, life got easier when our diaper company gave us a dozen more covers. We just stopped running out, and that was awesome. But the smaller number was doable. (remember that covers should air dry, which means you need more to cover drying time)

This is using the dryer. If we were trying to hang dry... we would need at least twice as many. (we do hang all the covers)

Thank you all for the info. I am trying to talk dh into doing cloth. We have before, but I had a joint issue and had trouble keeping up with the laundry.
