Hi all,

My girls were born 10/29/07 and they were 6 lbs 10 oz, and 6 lbs 5 oz. Everyone keeps telling me they were so big for being twins... I must have been huge... etc etc. Anyhow, I just thought I would ask everyone what theirs were.

Mine were 7-4 and 7-0 at 38 weeks. People always act surprised when they hear of twins being over 5 pounds. I think it might have to do with general poor nutrition in our society, and the fact that most twins are born early for one reason or another.

Wife of one and mom of five, including my HBAC twins!

I'm so interested in this subject. Fascinated actually. My singletons were all 8.8 pounds or bigger (or Hannah would have been if they hadn't induced me at 37 weeks....she was 7.4 already!) so I'm wondering what this is going to be like at the end. I read all the time about how big they are supposed to be during the week I am in and I'm almost frightened of 32+ weeks! I was just joking with my MW that I want to get them to 36 weeks and then happily will give birth at 37!

DD2 was 5 lbs 7 oz
DS was 6 lbs 11 oz
at 37 weeks.

It was a scheduled section, because I had cholestasis, which is life-threatening to the babies. We might have induced, but DS was transverse.

Who knows how big they might have been had we waited until labor started...

FWIW, my singleton was 7 lbs 9 oz. a

Twins were 7 1/2 each at 38 weeks

There are quite a few mammas here with big babies. I think that it is because we are more careful about nutrition and getting adaquate calories, vs. mainsteam mammas.

5 lbs 6 oz both at 36 weeks. I was induced, so they would've been a little bigger, but they would've been born soon - I was 7 cm already.

dd was 6 lbs 3 oz at 40 weeks, and ds was 9 lbs 10 oz at 42 weeks (different set of paternal genes )

What big babies some of you had! Mine came on their own at 37w2d, weighing 6-11 and 6-15. We went home in 24 hours, they were super-healthy, no problems I get that comment a lot, too, and I think ti's b/c so many people don't take good care of themselves and have poor nutrition and are not resting properly, overly stressed, ect. Congrats on your twins!!!

Do you really think we have that much control over how long a pregnancy continues or how large a baby is? I'm always told I did a "good job" which makes me wonder. If I had some sort of problem that made me go into ptl or the babies had some health problems would I have done a "bad job?" I just worry that by saying we have complete control over it we are demeaning or insulting to those who had tiny babies or babies who had some trouble, kwim?

yes, I watched my diet but I was also a miserably tired the entire time. I didn't really "do" anything.

I believe we have LOT of control over it. I'm not saying that women who have PTL or other complications did something "wrong," but pregnancies are much more likely to be healthy and low-risk if women take care of themselves, especially with nutrition. I've seen a study that women who get at least 80-100 gm of protein daily have almost zero chance of getting pre-eclampsia. And if you simply look at the statistics on these boards (around 60% of twins being carried 37 weeks or later), I think they speak for themselves.

I had cholestasis, so I had a c-section at 38.4. My ds was 6 lbs and dd was 6 lbs 1 1/2 oz. Prior to that my singletons were:
ds1 was 7.13 - 2.5 wks early
ds2 was 7.11 - 2 wks "overdue"
dd1 was 6.12 - 1.5 wks "overdue"
dd2 was 6.3 - 2 wks "overdue"

I took great care of myself, followed Dr. Luke's guidelines, and birthed a 3 pounder and a 2 pound 13 ouncer at 29 weeks.

And I do find myself bothered by the "good job" comments and the like. I did a good job, too. Sometimes the body does what it does, and no matter how hard you work against it, the body wins (or loses).

Betsy, mama to beautiful, strong MZ twins Lillian and Kate, born 11 weeks early on January 10, 2006.

You're right! We can all do our best but in the end, we don't have control of the outcome. Some things are out of our hands. :

I think its great that some of you carried as long as you did and had big babies. But please dont assume that people who have preterm babies did something wrong. And I'm not going to sit here and write about all the things that I did 'right' b/c it when comes down to it, it doesnt matter. I belong to a very mainstream twin site, they have just as many full term twins as this site does, if not more, so dont blame 'mainstreamers' poor nutrition for preterm babies and please dont blame others with preterm babies for not having control, poor nutrition, or whatever else is the blame in your eyes.

My twins were born preterm and I dont have a reason, I was a picture of health until one day my body decided it was time and there was no stopping it. I just ask that you be more careful of the terms you use, b/c you really do sound like mama's of preemies did something 'wrong' and many times, we didnt.

So glad you said this... it's something I've felt in several threads in this forum recently and it's been bothering me but I couldn't figure out what exactly or why or how to phrase it... so thank you.

There is so much about parenting in general -- and multiples in particular -- that is beyond our control. WE all just do the best we can, and go from there.

40 plus weeks, well over 8 pounds each.

I drank 1-2 gallons of water a day, 150 grams of protein, green leafies and absolutely no sugar, starches or anything else. I salted my food to keep my blood volume up. There is much more but that is the gist of it and I tell every mama of multiples about the books and research that I did and that benefitted my pregnancy.

I have and would NEVER put down a woman who went into preterm labor. I HAVE had ire and criticism for the medical community and how they have misled women about what is needed to carry twins or triplets to term. It still bothers me.

Don't be bothered by "good job" comments. Its REALLY fricken hard to eat like that for months on end. Its hard to stop everything and rest when your body says to. Its hard to give up things. And I wouldn't read too much into when people here say 'good job". I am not here much but I know many of the twin mamas here have given up a lot to do what they feel like is best for their children.

We have no control over birth. None at all. I absolutely agree.

You are lucky to have so much support from mainstream twin boards. I got a lot of sh*t for how I ate and that I was homebirthing. I got accused of putting my children in harms way for even considering homebirthing them. I really think some women hoped something went wrong with my pregnancy so they could point and say "see, we told you so". Arrogance is everywhere.

It bugs me too that its here at MDC. MDC is not what it used to be. There are lots and lots of posers. Lots of people who like to wear the 'crunchy' label and think they are better than others. But that crap is everywhere. I think its just more fun for others to make fun of MDC. Whatever. That's fine.

But I continue to recommend that diet and research to women with multiples who want to know. I think its important.

Just want to chime in and thanks the mamas who are speaking up on "trying our best." That's all we can do, really.

I'm just about at 32 weeks and super grateful that we made it this far. Couldn't do anything about the opening cervix at 22 weeks except have an emergency cerclage and thank goodness that's holding!

I've appreciated all the support and encouragement on this site, particularly on nutrition and resting. I know it has helped me do the best I can.

But I still have no control over what happens in the next week, or month, or more. I'm delighted to see the range of sizes of babies born to mamas here. The BEST PART is that they all turned out healthy, whether they were three pounds or eight plus.
