I was chatting to my good friend yesterday who lives across the road, and happens to be a twin herself (but born in Uruguy so not relevant to the freaky thing), saying how I'm so scared about the birth and all the possible complications etc etc etc and she told me don't worry there are loads of people it goes alright for such as her Mum, her next door neighbour, the girl across the road, ( what!?! news to me. She's got a twin brother apparently but I'd thought they were just siblings). Then the girl's ( non twin but who lives next door to where his Mum lived when she conceived the twin siblings) brother had twins but lost one early on.

Then there's me whose been here for two years now.

Sorry if that doesn't read cohesively. I hope you get the gist. 4 sets of twins conceived in this patch of 10 ten houses - who knows if there were others, since most other neighbours have moved about. It's just funny my friend is a twin herself because I was like

OMG - it's YOU next
You've got all the stats on your side regarding genes and you live on twin street too

She's had two children since she's been here though, (in 7 years), but still.....
I'm not going to let it rest with teasing her.

My grandma's mother was a twin, so I've got some genetic background, but do you think there's something in the air/water to encourage fraternal twinning here !!?

The statistics I've read all point to an increase in twinning. The culprits often point to increased maternal age and infertility treatments. From what I understand though, the increase in identicals is also increasing and they're suppose to be spontainous. Weird.

In my town of 50,000 last Christmas there were 13 sets of twin due that month. CRAZY!

In my tiny country school (600-ish kids from K-12), there were 12 sets of twins - my grade was one of the few w/no twins in it, but the average class was only about 40 students. There was a news story about it at the time. We were all joking that it was incest related but really, it does make one wonder...

My best friend and I both had our first set of twins within two weeks of each other. We also have a good friend who had twins 2 years earlier. I was 29, and my friends are around 34 years old. All natural conceptions.... Many people at our church were concerned that we were contagious!

I wonder if there is any connection - you know how women who are close end up with menstrual cycles that occur at the same time...

mother to girl (8), boy (7), girl (5) and twin boys (12/07) and a little boy due Feb 5!!

When we lived in CA we had 2 neighbors that became our friends. One was pregnant with MZ girls when we moved, then we had our MZ girls the next year, and then the next summer the other neighbor had MZ girls.

Heather, Army wife & Mama to M (10), J (9), L & S (my HBAC babies are 7!), N & R (5), and A (born 11/30/12 UBA2C)

I have heard that the folate that they are now adding into the food supply, to reduce spina bifida, is causing more twins. I don't know if it causes more fraternal or identical twins.

In our preschool class, we have 2 sets of id twins, mine and a set of girls! .

(Contagious streets, that is funny)

Courtney wife to geek.gif and mom to 4 boys: chicken3.gif   . I need caffix.gif !
They're not typos. . . I can't spell!

We have three houses in a row with twins. First has b/g 2 year olds, then 12 year old girls, then us with 1 year old girls. We all did drugs though.

Me.  With 1 spouse, 4 kids, 16 chickens, 74 matchbox cars, 968,562+ legos, a dishwasher waiting to be emptied, a washing machine waiting to be filled and a lost cup of tea in the house.

We took a Kindergym class about 2 years ago and there was only one single born child in the class -- 3 sets of twins, a set of triplets with an MZ set of twins and a DZ triplet and the lonely singleton.

SAHM to F & P, : fraternal twins born 3/05, : I, born 12/07 & at 5 weeks in July 2009

IVF for sure increases the rate of MZ twinning, even though they're only just beginning to admit it. I don't know a ton about IVF, but I wonder if it has to do with the day the embryos are transfered or anything. I suppose it makes sense that messing around with embryos like that might cause them to split more often than they would otherwise. But it's really not too uncommon to hear about women having one embryo transfered and ending up with twins, and wasn't there a story in the news lately where a woman had one embryo transfered and ended up with MZ triplets? Oh wait, I remember, there was a woman who had 2 embryos transfered and both of them split and she had quads, two MZ girls and two MZ boys! Also you read about triplets where two are MZ (which obviously happens spontaneously as well; my brother had classmates like this in high school).

I don't know but I really do wonder what causes MZ twinning. Probably a bazillion different things. I wonder what caused it in my case (especially since I secretly sometimes wonder if I thought myself into it ).

Anyway personally I don't really know too many people with twins. But then again, I don't really know too many people period

We live on a "twin street" too. There are the twin boys up the street (they are in my 6 year old DDs class), their next door neighbors (teens), then the lady next to them has a DD who is due with twins (she stays with her mom for extended periods when her DH works), my b/g twins, and the identical twin girls down the street (they are in my oldest DDs class). All within 8 eight houses (there are about 15 on the road).

First our fish spawned. Then two litters of kittens were followed by a litter of 11 puppies. Then we got pregnant (natural conception) and it was twins. Our friends call our home "fertility house." DH is afraid of unprotected sex!
