How exciting! Let me tell you at least you're suspecting twins so it'll only be about 90% shock

If twins, will your MW still be able to attend your birth or will she have to transfer care?

Two weeks ago, at 25 weeks gestation, we discovered that I am carrying twins. I had been feeling "big" but my homebirth midwife (a mother of twins herself) didn't really consider it a serious possibility. (Plus, everyone assured me that you "pop" sooner with the second.) I had been measuring normally for a single baby until right before Thanksgiving. When I expressed concern about my size at that time, her thought was that perhaps I had too much fluid or possibly gestational diabetes. Palpation and a doppler check for two heartbeats were inconclusive. My uterus was measuring 2 weeks ahead which also wasn't a clear sign. I agreed to get an ultrasound and it was there that we had confirmation that, indeed, there are two!

I have many friends who thought for sure they had twins because they just seemed so much bigger the second time around. While I am no fan of ultrasound (I didn't have one with my first pregnancy), I am relieved to know how many I have. I think you will find it to be very helpful in your case too!

Good luck!

Good point!

If it is twins, she'll be able to attend the birth. Whether that's what actually happens will probably depend on several factors. I'd prefer a homebirth, but it would be a HBAC and her first twin birth as primary (she's still a student, and I don't know yet how much experience her preceptor has with twins) so we'll have to see what everyone's comfort level is, kwim? If I go with an OB and hospital delivery, it'll be an automatic RCS. Not my first choice.

Thanks for the luck, ladies. I may need it.

Can't wait to hear the news.

At my 12 week (technically I was 11w2d) prenatal OB appt, doc said I was measuring big. But he said the same thing with my 5yr old singleton, even had an u/s early on with him to rule out twins. Big babies run in my family. So he shrugged it off. Then he pulled out his Doppler and couldn't find any heartbeat. He assured me there's really only a 60% chance of locating a heartbeat at 12 weeks. So he ordered an ultrasound just to be sure. 2hrs later I was on the ultrasound table, and this is what we saw:

I know twins isn't very desirable for you. It is a complete change of lifestyle when you have more than one. But I know you'll feel blessed regardless.

Can't wait to hear the news!!

This has been the weirdest day ever. Ups, downs, everything in between.

It isn't twins. My midwife, the tech, and I were all shocked at that, we were so sure. But anyway, it's just one healthy baby measuring 17w2d, estimated at 7 oz, and very wiggly. Good placenta and placement, everything normal, including fluid levels. Nothing at all to indicate why I'm measuring 5 weeks ahead. The only possible explanation is that he likes to hang out as high as possible, tucking his itty bitty back into my fundus.

Thanks for putting up with me and giving me so much support and info. I'm off to get a nap. I think I need it.

Aww, just one means you're going to get twice as much sleep as the rest of us

Yeah for one baby with some extra room for doing somersaults!

Awww... bet it was kind of a bittersweet moment. congrats on the healthy little peanut.

I measured big with all my pregnancies. And all were over 8lbs, 'cept the twins, but they were still over 7lbs each. At my 11w2d u/s when we learned it was twins. They were estimated to be 10oz each.

Again. Congratulations!!

You must be exhausted from it all hopefully you'll be able to settle into the pregnancy again and enjoy the rest of it peacefully. You might even look back on it one day when you're holding two and be grateful it was one this time round :
