congrats kerc

 

still puddling away.  i didn't finish all my grading so i have to do it this weekend... bah.  but i know my students will be seriously pissed if its been 2 weeks of break and they still don't have projects back.  so i have about 2 hrs of grading left and maybe another 30 min entering grades.  and maybe 30 min for class prep too - i think i only prepped 1 class for monday.  and that is the end of break!

 

my break was not so great - i was sick for most of the first week, only finished up a few committee things, then DH left town the next week and by the ime he came back i was just fried.

 

so here's a ? - I have a student, did well in HS, but is academically challenged in his favorite classes here.  He mostly hasn't been getting things done on time. time management lacking i assume, but his mom reached out and sad that he is really struggling to manage his college work.  He's my advisee as well as work-study and in addition he is in one of my classes.  I gave him the week before break off so that he could focus on his school work.  I plan on siting down with him and making a schedule for th week with all his class times and ask him to pencil in all SI study sessions etc.  Anything else I can do?  Id like to set him up for general success, not just success in my class.

 

on the flip side, I had a failing, but promising student, that emailed me last week and wanted to see me for office hrs.  we worked for a couple extra hours together and I sent him to a tutor that works with me, and he got a 95 on this past test.  Not only does it make me feel good, but also it validates for me that the students who want to do well, will do well.

Carita: is there a student support services office on campus? Here there's a special study skills class/time management too. Also a few support people who can check in with students like the one you describe.

I think i AM the support team.  I reported this student to the support team through th eearly warning system and as far as I know, the only action was to forward that form back to me, his advisor, to let me know he was on early warning in my class.  There are no skills classes for students, only a class taught by the learning specialist if you are placed on probation.

 

I think the freshman orientation class is supposed to go over these things, but its not consistent enough between instructors.  I think I am supposed to then do most of the advising in this case as both a professor of a "problem" course, and as his advisor, and as his boss.  But other than working out a schedule, I'm not really sure what to say/do.

I have a question about exams.  I'm giving an exam tomorrow in my 135-person class.  These exams end up being about 80% bubble sheet and 20% short answer.  As you all know, writing an exam takes time.  

 

As always, a couple students can't make it to the exam for various reasons from ones that are officially ok to ones that might just be bad luck, but who am I to tell.  If they tell me ahead of time, I'm usually fairly lenient.  

 

So do you write a different exam if you are giving it to someone the next day?  I hate having to spend extra time on these 3 students who can't make it to the scheduled exam, but I also feel like it's not fair for them to get the same exam, having had the opportunity to discuss it with classmates who have already taken it.  I've done it multiple ways (new M/C exam with questions swapped out, same exam, essay exam, etc.)  Just curious how others handle this.

Depends on how pressed for time I am... sometimes I rearrange the questions or the answers, or change a few questions from "which of the following are,,," to "which of the following are NOT..."  If the student is a habitual offender, I might do an entirely essay/short answer exam. 

 

In my non-majors class, all make up exams are taken on one day at the end of the semester - students are allowed to make-up only one exam and I don't ask for reasons.  For those, I use the same exams, different cover sheet... usually it is long enough between the exam and the make-up that they don't remember what was on it the first time around.

So jealous I didn't come up with that.  Positively brilliant. 

 

1 week into spring quarter here.  I've got 50 students and a flooded classroom, so they've wired around the lighting system so that the lights are just ON.  Not workable for a "look at pretty NASA pictures" kinda class.  Evidently, if you teach at 12:30, there is simply no other place to move the class. 

 

So, it sounds a bit like a punchline to "how many classroom services guys does it take to turn off a light?" the solution will be for some guy to show up and turn the lights off at 12:25 every day, and then show back up at 2:25 every day to turn them back on.

I love that idea too. In fact, given how many students stop coming to class by the end of the semester, it might entirely eliminate my need to give any make-up exams!

Sometimes I rewrite an exam for a make-up, particularly if I have reason to believe that the student will confer with other students. These days I usually don't, in part because it's an essay exam and all the questions were directly on the study guide anyhow, but largely because my current campus is full of working adults with families who don't have time to meet with their classmates to find out what was on the test. I'm sure they could, but most of them don't.

I love the idea of a common make-up day at the end of the semester.  Have you had any complaints from students who have "forgotten" the material by then?

 

I decided this time around to just give the students the same test.  Usually, as I get grumpier, I resort to things like essay tests.  Last year I had to write "alternate" essay exams for a disability accommodation, so I might as well use those again.  

 

And the rest of the class bombed it anyways.  Not sure talking to them would be any help.  Besides, I give the class a detailed study guide, then write my questions based on the study guide, so it's not like the topics covered on the exam will be a surprise.

I've had one complaint.  It was a "habitual" offender student who wanted to turn everything in late and who missed two exams. Everyone else played by my rules... and I reminded them of the notification in the syllabus with every exam. :)

I just went to save my lecture as Week10_NameOfLecture and realized it was Week11.  Minor rays of sunshine in a blizzard of work make all the difference.  (and now that it's Wed... that means 4.5 weeks to go!)

I'm on a sick day today. Meaning Monday night my throat was scratchy. Yesterday I woke up and thought wow this sucks, but stayed home as I don't have classes on Tuesday. By afternoon I was sleeping in bed. Today: better. Still not teaching (hence the "sick" day). I'm grading though. The job is never done. Never. I need a better way to handle the mountains of grading. I did hire an undergrad student who totally flaked 2 weeks before spring break (that is flaked 2 weeks in a row) so I got behind.

 

Now I'm catching up on my sick day. sweet.

I so hear you on the grading thing...  I have two exam sitting on my desk to be graded and will have three more by the end of next week... plus all the homework and quizes and...  LOL. Ii have 8  more exams to write for this semester. I should be doing that instead of hanging out here - I'm such a procrastinator.

Argh.  I gotta bang this out some place.

 

Today was one of those that makes me hate my job.  Argh.  Argh.

I came home late and very frustrated after the faculty meeting. DD asked me what was so wrong with it, and I explained that I found it very frustrating to go to a meeting and listen to people argue about things without listening to each other. It was made worse by the fact that it made me so late that I couldn't eat dinner before taking her to her flute lesson.

DD responded that this was a lot like why she doesn't like playing tetherball on the playground, because it was mostly waiting and listening to people who are arguing about if someone yelled "tether" before some else did something else.

That's about right. Faculty meetings are not that far off from third grade tetherball games.

Ah yes. Only sometimes we wish for the playground aid to supervise. Seriously awful s**t goes down at our faculty meetings. Awful awful stuff. And the long standing traditional time of when we have them is 3pm on Friday. oy. Fortunately the 4 untenured faculty (of about 15) all refuse to meet then. Personally i could get past the friday afternoon piece if everyone got along. But they don't. And there's rudeness and bigotry and sexism. And that's the first 10 minutes.

I admit I was the one who ended our faculty meeting today, by essentially walking out.  Not because people were being mean, just because they were wasting time complaining about changes in how the computer systems are being managed on campus. 

 

My dh was just presented with the opportunity to possibly have a course buy-out next fall which would allow him to spend about 1 week away each month at his research lab (in another state).  He asks "is this ok?".  My only thought involved the lab I teach until 6 one day a week in the fall, meaning I can't pick up kids from various day care/after school programs, and the mess it causes me, who is going to be the one who has to deal with it, etc.  One week a month isn't bad, but I know that one week here, one week there tends to add up.

 

On a similar note, I just realized, when looking at my calendar, that either I or dh or both are away from home this summer from June 5th - August 1st, with only the scattered day here and there between trips.  I just signed myself up to fly to the Philippines for field work mere hours after returning from a weekend canoe trip, and then heading straight from there to our family vacation with about 36 hours layover at my mother-in-law's house.  And all of that travel is bracketed by dh being off at his lab for a week or more on either end.  At least we do have a vacation scheduled in there!  All of us!  Together! 

 

Sometimes I think I'm going to punch the next person who asks what I do with my "summers off".

WWYD, field people (like some of the geologists):

 

I'm scheduled to go tomorrow to the science museum (with a huge fossil exhibit) in big city 2.5 hrs from here. I can't actually drive a university rented vehicle because they haven't approved me as a driver (irked.gif despite having done the paperwork in early march). However I have 11 students, 3 drivers among them. So I'm renting 2 vans and off we go.

 

Fast forward to last weekend: I learn my SIL is gravely ill (in the ICU with pneumonia that isn't responding well to antibiotics). SIL/BIL have a 6 yo + a 1 month old. My out of state inlaws happened to be visiting me and they left early to go down and have been taking care of baby + big sister since about last Saturday. Neither is really a baby person and when we talk on the phone they sound at their wits end. One of us (DH or myself) is going down this weekend to help. The logical person is me to care for the baby (dh is not a baby person).  "Down" = same major metro area as my field trip.

 

WWYD: my department chair said it was ok to send students back on their own and just drive my own vehicle down tomorrow. I could spend the night and basically save myself 5 hrs in the car. But that means I send 11 students off to drive 140 miles without me in university vehicles.

I have sent students to the "big city" in a van on their own and just met them there.  They are adults and should be able to handle it.  Just give them your contact info, meet them at the museum, lead them on their trip, and then send them home.  Your chair sounds fine with it, too.  You couldn't be in both vehicles at once anyways, and it's not like they have to drive some complicated roads to get there.  Honestly, we send our students out for a week camping trip en route to field camp, on their own, in university vehicles.  It'll be ok.

That's pretty much what I thought. But there's a LOT of hand holding that goes on here ....  the biggest issue is fueling the vehicles before they return them. I trust one of the drivers and I'll just give her cash.

First final here is tonight at 5:30.  Just did the final proof and modifications on my exam about 10 minutes ago. LOL... 100 questions to be answered on a scantron sheet to make grading easy.

 

Still have to write the final for Anatomy which is on Monday morning... 200 questions in multiple guess, matching, labeling (with an obnoxiously large word bank) format.  Labeling is going to take up quite a bit of it, I think.

 

Final for Environmental Science is already written and exam isn't until Wednesday.  One last class with them and we're going to finish watching Avatar - they have to write a 1 page report on the environmental issues raised by the film.

 

Oh... my fun this week - I get to go talk to the 6th graders that the local middle school about the circulatory system.  I'm taking a couple stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, maybe my tuning forks and oto/ophthalmoscope.  We're going to do a conga line with colored stones to demonstrate movement of oxygenated blood out to the tissues and deoxygenated blood back to the heart and then the lungs.  :)  Hoping it works as well as I think.  I've got about 40 minutes per group (3 groups).

 

I interview next Thursday, and there is the potential that, if that doesn't work out, I might be considered at my current position for full time in 6 months to a year.

Hi Ladies. This thread is brilliant - I'm getting insight into my future life, it seems, that I don't think I'd see elsewhere. I'm a first-year PhD student (and am trying to conceive). I have a dilemma that I don't feel I can talk to anyone about. I'm hoping you might have some insight and that you don't mind me joining in.

 

I am in a social science field working as a GA for Famous Professor. She and a couple colleagues have written two papers with a dataset they scraped form the web. One of the papers was rejected and the other is descriptive, not really A-journal worthy. I like the context they're working in, and I proposed an idea last year. They passed me up on my idea.

 

This year I presented the idea to another prof, who believes it's really interesting. Together we made it crisp and clear, and I can articulate it much more convincingly now. The prof I'm working with doesn't want me talking to Famous Professor about this idea because she and colleagues might be tempted to steal it. Yesterday, Famous Professor asked me point-blank what I'm working on with the other prof, and upon hearing the general idea (I didn't get to the core) she kind of warned me off her territory (the public dataset). At dinner last night Famous Professor's other grad student brought up their paper on the topic ans she shushed him right away. 

 

I hate this situation. I'm a really open person, and usually have a lot of faith that people/colleagues won't steal from each other. I wish we could all work together on the idea. I'm not sure why we can't, other than the author list getting too long. I'm also scared that I will look like the one who is wrong, by working on research involving their area of interest.

 

I don't have a direct question fo you, I'm curious if this is something that happens all the time, rarely, and whether you guys have any advice. I don't think anyone is being malicious here, but I do think that there's a reason Famous Professor is famous...she's ambitious and takes opportunities when they come.

I live just outside of Tuscaloosa, one thing about a huge tornado roaring through and killing 200 people two days before class ends, no finals. Of course, that is sarcasm. My family and I were in the bunker of the department I work in (aka the basement). Thank goodness. I feel like that is the safest place in all of the city. The devastation is unbelieveable.

Namaste - I'm glad to hear your family is ok, and my heart goes out to your community.  The pictures I've seen are frightening.

 

Rosie - Welcome!  I wish I had some advice.  The obvious thing to do in a perfect world is to have everyone collaborate together - your dataset, my idea, let's have fun with this.  But it sounds like there is bad blood already there and you are caught in the middle.  I have been one half of a situation like this before, with the other professor telling her students not to talk to me or get any advice from me (or have me as their co-advisor which they both wanted to do). Except that I was perfectly willing to collaborate, give the students advise w/o being their official advisors, and so on.  In the end, she left, so the situation kind of sorted itself out (and now I'm advising both students).  It was immensely frustrating to see the students caught in the middle (i.e. wanting to work/talk with both of us, but being told by prof #1 not to do it).  

 

One. week. left.

 

And I just got an extra bonus day.  I was supposed to be out in the field, in a cold rainstorm today.  We drove 2 hours north only to find that many of the roads were still officially closed for winter, and those that weren't had too much snow and mud to really be passable (esp. after the rainstorm hit).  So we bagged it.
