GAWD I hate questions like that!!! I just laughed and said that was an interesting question - I think I'm a combination of both depending on the day...I certainly work hard and there are days when I stay late and I always get my work done but of course I value my family and loved ones, too...life has to have balance..yada yada...

What would you have said??

Definitely work to live.
But then, I happen to be reading Your Money or Your Life right now, lol.

But how do you answer that without looking like a lazy slacker. It is obviously a trick question. So how do you answer it AND still get the job?

Karina, I think your answer was spot on and, I'm guessing, there's some truth to it. I definitely work to live but there are (rare, very rare) times I have to make work a bit of a priority.

OP, I think you handled it the right way. It's OK to call BS on those "I read it in a book on management!" style interview questions. It makes you seem real, thinking for yourself and intelligent.

plus, in the right environment a sense of humor can go far. I would have smirked, and possibly guffawed. but I have major slacker tendencies ...

We're brainstorming on ways to change the way we are living, as it is definitely not working for our family. I used to be a good job interviewer - I have to wonder how I'd do now that I've been a SAHM for almost 4 years.

BTW, OP, I think you handled the question nicely.

I think you handled it well.

I would probably have said that I really believe that's a false choice - that challenging, fulfilling work is important to me, as is following through on my commitments, but that this is also compatible with leading a balanced life and valuing the people in it.

Hmmm, neither. I live to live, and work and everything else in life are...part of life. I enjoy my work as much as I enjoy all of the other parts of my life, no more, no less.

Clear as mud, hmmm?

Live to work would be my goal in life. Someday I'll be able to do this...

I heard that phrase used recently to describe the work attitude many Gen Xers have, vs Boomer "live to work" attitudes. It was in an article talking about generational differences, but it noted that Xers tend to be more about efficiency and flexibility to live their life outside of work whereas Boomers tend to focus on putting in time at the office and value face to face contact. The article, in the current issue of Working Mother magazine, approached both in a non-judgmental fashion.

So, I probably would have said about what you did, bringing up the article and the different perspectives, and noting that I value productivity and efficiency, and also want the flexibility to take care of my family and keep my life balanced.
