I'm thinking it is not live and we are just watching a video. Mine says 5:12 and there is a play/pause button.

Is the 3yo nursing? It looked to me yesterday like she was just holding mama's boob with her trunk. Elephants don't use their trunk to nurse, they use their mouth. I thought I read somewhere long ago that baby elephant's have to stand to nurse they don't lay down to nurse. Anyone know if that's true?

I wish I had realized there was French yesterday! That would have made elephant watching more informative.

yes, she was holding booby with her trunk, but she was nursing too. Every now and then there was an angle where you could see her trunk to the side and she was nursing away

And yes, I believe they would stand to nurse. Again, I don't know very much about elephants, but the other large mammals I've raised (horses and cows) have all needed to stand before nursing.

At this site they mention that the management system in that zoo is "Protected Contact" in which the keepers are not supposed to interfere in the actions between elephants. It's an interesting read, even though the article seems disapproving of the method.

IN PC, the elephants are not proteced at all. Noone can interrupt aggressivness, mobbing, or other unnormal behaviour between the elephants. The keepers/trainers can only try to make the elephants focus on something else during a conflict, but thay can not actually interrupt it, as in free contact.

nothing more to say I guess :

that's an interesting article alright.

FOr those wondering: the live images have stopped and now there's 4 recorded clips that you can watch. Too bad really that they don't just leave the cameras rolling though!

did you see that May Tagu's sire Luka killed 2 keepers in Belgrade in the 1980s? Wow...

Wow two even, not "just" one... I wonder what happened.
I kind of forgot how wild and dangerous elephants are, I only saw the "mama-in-labour" and "cute newborn baby" side of it all for a while!

well I'm not sure it was meant to be a full time elephant-cam, I think it was more of a labour watch.

nothing more to say I guess :

if you want to see the other extreme of elephant birth check this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4MzcpX3viY for a highly managed birth.

Some interesting info at the end though, baby elephants nurse for up to 5 years and stay with the mother til they are 14. The commentary is English, just the subtitles are in Arabic.

nothing more to say I guess :

Yeah it was all set up for the birth. But now that they have all the cameras installed, they should leave them running!
THough, I guess they would want people to come to the Zoo and pay entrance, instead of looking at the elephants on their computer.

I was just watching the first clip from just after the birth, and wow, May Tagu seriously kicked that baby around a few times!!
I noticed that every time that happened, the camera turned away kind of... I wonder if that was a coincidence or if they wanted to avoid having live footage of the baby being trampled... *shivers*

It takes the sooooo long to learn to use their trunk! It's hilarious. I once saw a video of a baby elephant stepping on its own trunk and tripping on it, contemplating it as if the trunk had a mind of its own. I so love elephants...

ahh, i went to bed right before the baby was born too!

and wow the older one kicks the heck out of the baby but the mama headbutts to keep it away. i wish we could keep watching too, darn it!! that is cool though. i wonder if it would work better if they were allowed access in and out rsther than being stuck so the bigger baby could keep busy doing something else some?

yeah, about five mins after the birth, the keepers threw in more grass and the 3yo did stop pestering the heck out of the new one. that lasted all of three mins but i think you're right about finding a distraction. i think its neat that the keepers are trained not to interfere b'c the family dynamics need to evolve naturally - but they are in a pretty confined & unnatural environment anyway... so?? really cool to see how the "aunt" helps out, even with helping the baby figure out the whole nursing thang!

* even though i know we can't watch anymore, i've popped in here a few times today to see if there is a health update! i think i'm in love with this elephant family

yeah..i mean normally they arent stuck in a tiny area together to bond or whatever. id think that the older one would find a distraction for at least a few minutes at a time in the wild since there isnt just them and nowhere to go.

Update from the "blog" on the website:

Baby K's first night: a good rest

The elephant herd has spent a perfect night with their newest addition.
Last night at 9.30 pm the placenta was birthed (is that how you say it?? ).
Both mama Phyo Phyo and baby K had a good sleep. Baby K is nursing well from her mama. May Tagu is past her initial jealousy and shows herself as a big sister now. She doesn't leave K's side.

The introduction to Dumbo went unexpectedly well. The matriarch keeps some distance from baby K and chose to sleep somewhere else. She's a bit overwhelmed by the little miss.
In short: everything is going well with the elephant family.

THey showed some images on the news (yes it's national news here lol) just now and omg, so cute!!!!!
I'll have a look later if they put it on their website and post a link.
