I was a maybe... it's slightly off-putting to me, but it would depend on what my other options were.

There is a line of soaps and lotions called Dirty Hippie, IIRC...

I would eat there, but I think I'd choose a different name. Just like a few people mentioned, the term "dirty hippie" can be perceived as derogatory.

Hippie does not equal dirty....dirty does not equal hippie....

I like The Hungry Hippie suggestion.

I've never liked the term Dirty Hippie, but that wouldn't necessarily preclude me from eating there.

How about the Tripping Hippie? LOL OK, the Crazy Hippie? Tie-Dye and Granola? The Psychedelic Hippie? Hungry, Hungry Hippies?

I've been thinking about this name thing all day. How about The Happy Hippie?

I'd eat there and not think twice about it! Honestly, the word Dirty wouldn't change my opinion at all -- I'd just think it was a unique/eccentric place. You hear of 'strange' restaurant names all the time ... 3 Blind Pigs, The Blue Goat, etc etc etc.

Another vote for Hungry, Hungry Hippies!

I voted maybe in the poll. I'd have to have read some great critic reviews or had awesome suggestions by friends before I try new restaurants in general. I don't hate the name, but it sounds more like a pub or bar name than a sandwich shop to me.

My first thought is I'd absolutely love it and being dying to eat there if I saw it. But then this is true, too:

But I would eat there for sure, so you better have some yummy food too! lol

Yup.

Also, you'd better be prepared to keep the place SPOTLESS at all times. Because if I came in on an "off" day and your place was messy, I would be thinking, "dirty is right!"

I said no. Heres my thought process.

I figured with a name like that the person in charge is probably someone who is into wholesome, organic, unique, fresh, ingredients, probably has a good amount of time invested in coming up with healthy and tasty meals and probably has a number of vegetarian menu items (which I like). Great.... just one problem. The name itself gives away the fact that this earth loving, eco friendly owner.... also has terrible hygene. I don't want any "dirty hippies" making my food. I invision a cluttered kitchen, lack of soap, and greesey, matted hair intermixed accidentally with in my lentels.

Keep the word hippie if thats truely you but, ditch dirty and find something else equally quarky and different that can be seated side by side with food in someone's mind.

I would eat there. Why? Because the name would catch my eye and I would think that it's cool and I'd want to check it out, because, hey, if I didn't like it, I wouldn't come back again and I'd have a neat story to tell. The other part of it though is that I'd think there's a story behind it like a neat, hip, mama who's trying to make a go at it and with a name like that she either has to be most excellent to keep her business open with a name like that OR she really needs the business because she isn't going to stay open very long with a name like that.

Unless you have a loyal following and target audience already in place, I wouldn't risk it personally. You do risk offending people who don't share your sense of humor and who might have preconceived notions that will drive business away. But, sure, I'd try it to throw some $$ your way as I'm into indie eating places and would want to do my part to stimulate the economy and would think you mean well.

It would depend a lot on what the place looked like. If it were open, inviting, bright and clean them maybe if the menu appealed to me. If it were dim or dingy or seemed sketchy, most likely not.

I personally like the Hungry Hippie suggestions I also like Trippy Hippie or Happy Hippie.

ETA I do think you could name a sandwich or something The Dirty Hippie. Especially if it was messy to eat and was made with "hippie" ingredients. Like a sloppy joe, but crunchier.

See, I think I'd be more likely to stop somewhere like that if I were just passing by, because it would make me think it's more likely to be vegan-friendly.

I would totally eat at a place called The Dirty Hippie. But I don't think it's a good name for a restaurant if you want anyone else to eat there too. I love the Hungry, Hungry Hippies variation someone came up with. But if you consider that route, make sure you look into any problems that might cause with the company that made (makes?) Hunrgy Hungry Hippos (Hasbro, maybe?). I've known big companies to give small companies hell for using similar names.

I haven't read through all the other posts...so if I'm saying something that's already been said, sry...

The "dirty" part doesn't really bother me. I know restaurants have sanitation standards, and inspectors. It may throw a lot of ppl off, though.

I don't like "hungry hippie" either, I just don't like the way it sounds...

The Crunchy Hippie, sounds good and not offensive at all. People might ask you what's so crunchy, though...

I'm going with "The Naked Hippie".

I would totally eat at "The Dirty Hippie", but I think after the responses you've gotten here you should give it a long, hard think. If MDC has qualms about it not sure how it would do out there in the real world.
