Each year dh's family does a holiday gift exchange and each year there is a theme. This year the theme is 'The Movies' which means that the gift has to pertain to a particular movie. The name of the movie gets written on the outside of the wrapped gift. It can be an obvious connection to the movie or a not so obvious connection. When all of the gifts are in the center of the room and it's your turn to pick a gift, the movie title could help you make your decision or could 'backfire' and be a not so obvious connection and be something you have totally not anticipated. I hope I explained that well. It's kind of corny, I know, but it's all in good fun and beats buying presents for each person (which we used to have to do)... there are about 20 people. The price range is anywhere from $40 to $60 dollars. The age range of the participants is 21 to 79. Ugh... hard to find something that would be somewhat useful to that broad of a range. Anyway, here are some examples of things I have come up w/so far:

1. A cordless phone - E.T. (get it, phone home, lol)
2. An alarm clock radio w/ipod dock - Good Morning Vietnam or Groundhog Day or even High Noon.
3. A waffle maker - Breakfast Club.
4. A bunch of booze/martini makings maybe - Cocktail.

That's all I can think of and I don't think any of them are that great. My dh thought that the phone wouldn't be good because he thinks all but his parents and us use cell phones exclusively. The alarm clock I thought was pretty good, but most people already have that. Ugh.... any thoughts/recommendations? TIA

And I promise I will give you the credit!

FWIW, This is dh's gift: A blender and a bottle of booze - Turner and Hooch!

How about Julia Child's cookbook or a morter and pestle or a nice french wine and cheese, the movie is "Julie & Julia" I just finished watching it so it's kind of fresh in my mind.

hmmm...I'll keep thinking...

are there many book lovers in your midst that would want books that have been made into movies like Shakespear's Hamlet, As You Like It, Romeo & Juliet etc...

Or Christians who may like a nice study Bible ( they can run even higher than $60) to go with the movie "The Ten Commandments" or something...

How about a new quilt or comforter that has roses in the print...movie "Bed of Roses"

Or a collection of gardening tools and seeds movie "The Secret Garden"

hmmm....still thinking...

If you could find a leg lamp, that would be the most awesomely awesome one IMO!

Will people get to choose a gift based on the movie on top, or are they given out at random and you have to guess what's in the package? If you want to go with something more people will use (but who wouldn't use a leg lamp that must be Italian?!), maybe:

Ocean's 11: Interesting decks of cards, poker chips, how to play card games book

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory: Candy; or Candy Making Supplies

Slumdog Millionaire: "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire" board game

Eh, not the greatest, I'll keep thinking about it.

Happy with my DH, 2 kids, dog, fish, and frogs

Everyone is in a circle around the room w/the gifts in the center. They have been on display all afternoon so everyone will have had a chance to think about which one they will choose. Everyone picks a number out of a hat. Number 1 goes first selecting and opening the gift of their choice. Then when it's #2's turn they can either select #1's gift, going for a sure thing, (causing #1 to then have to select another gift from the pile) or select a new gift from the pile. Then when it's the next person's turn, they can pick/take away anyone else's already opened gift or select a new gift from the pile. The object is to pick the highest number and be the last person to go.... the greatest choice of gifts.

Anyway, it's a lot of laughs and economical, too, because each person only has to purchase one gift.

i love the drum idea, and Ten Thousand Villages has a couple of inexpensive, traditional drums (under $25) and it's fair trade, so you're doing a good deed while also connectingg to a movie. that one is good.

my initial thought was a gift basket of hang-over cure supplies for the movie "The HangOver."

gift cert to sushi or seafood restaurant for "District 9" (abstractly, the "aliens" were called "prawns")

Julie and Julia--supplies ofr one of the simple recipes as a gift basket (or, a "coupon" for you to come and make it for the family)

i'm trying to think of the different movies that i've seen recently. LOL ah, balloons for Up

i love Up: I just met you and i LOVE you!

Jug of maple syrup, few boxes of spaghetti noodles, skittles: Elf

Pinot Noir & good wineglasses: Sideways

Bunch of chapsticks & a stuffed unicorn: Napoleon Dynamite

thats what i was thinking!

my ideas:
*pizza making supplies or gift cert. to a pizza place- " teenage mutant ninja turtles"

*gift cert to seafood restaurant- spongebob movie

*stuff from the whistle stop cafe http://www.whistlestopcafe.com/gift.html for the movie "fried green tomatoes"

*leather bound photo album from "Up"

*gift cert for bowling alley- king pin, or the big lebowski

*i like the chianti idea but would include some fava beans as well- some latino markets carry them dried and flavored like a snack item (but in spanish its habas) for silence of the lambs

this sounds fun! i want to do it!

Wow! These ideas are so great! Thanks so much! I'm still not sure yet, though.... I'm trying to avoid gift certificates and want to stay in the 40-60 dollar range.

'Window' shopping yesterday was really hard.... the crowds were horrible and someone almost ran into me in the target parking lot... It was really rough out there, lol!

I like the homemade pizza kit (to my knowledge everyone likes pizza and I'm such a foodie!) or was thinking maybe a Wilson volleyball set to go w/the movie Cast Away. My fil who's 79 has picnics and gatherings at his house in the summer so I think it would get used then? not sure?

Last year's theme was 'leisure' and it was a big hit. As a matter of fact the whole exchange was so much fun that everyone wanted to continue the tradition. It's nice, too, because if some relatives are coming in from out of town they can just bring a gift and participate. There were a few complaints from a few of the younger participants because they didn't get what they wanted, but all-in-all it was great!
