A new committee has been created on my campus, and I'm to head it up! Guess what it is? Go ahead, guess!

It's all about diversity!!! I'm going to try to get more things on campus that would attract people of other backgrounds, and I'll reach out to minorities on campus.

I really didn't know whether to be flattered or offended, though, when the campus life director who immediately thought of me when this committee was being formed, said that I'm a very outspoken person who pushes the envelope. LOL! I'm also the only person on Senate (besides a big beautiful woman who is mullato) who hangs out with people who aren't just caucasion, christian, straight, conformists.

Is "mullato" still an acceptable word? I didn't think so. It doesn't sound very PC.

But congrats on your new position!

I never heard it wasn't PC? Hmm.... "mixed" doesn' t sound right to me, ykwim? Mixed of what? Not species... mulatto is just a term for a person who has one white parent, and one black parent.

What would you say the politically correct term for a person who has one white parent and one black parent would be?

I dunno... biracial seems a bit off, too. The whole "race" thing seems wrong... we're all members of the human race. Mulatto just seems more specific, too. You can be considered biracial and be half Asian and half Native American.

Yah, I'm familiar with the definition. But I've only read it in old books--I've never heard anyone actually say it! To me, it's like saying Negro, which technically just means black, but nobody says anymore, because the people to whom it used to refer do not prefer that term.

And do you know where "mulatto" derived from? The word "mule," which is a cross-species animal. So, I consider it a put-down.

I'd say biracial, or half African-American and half white. If you know this woman well enough, perhaps you could ask her. Because if you call people something they are uncomfortable with, that will not further your cause of bringing people together.

CONGRATS!!

But I must agree, mullato is an old world type word-rarely used and often taken offensively.I hate the term biracial or mixed, but they are not considered as offensive. This can be your first project!! Teaching other that RACE is a fallacy-a tool of oppresion" My lil family deals with this daily, noone canfigure out "what" we are. And society is so screwed up that my DD was blown away when I told her some people will consider her "black. (We are of varied backf\grounds but DH is ASSUMED "black" or "African American" and I amassumed white, PR, and JEwish. Now I am by societies standard "white" Dh is a more varied mix-his parents are from Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic. From what we know their ancetry is Spanish (Spain), Native of the islands, African (Unkown), Italian, and ?? So whatis he? He considers himself Latino/Hispanic... DD is assumed white or Latina and DS has brown skin-he is assumed "biracial", Latino, even Filipino sometimes....
