It woke me out of a sound sleep the first time I heard it roaring over my house, it was so loud I thought it was a meteor or a jet plane about to crash but no crashing sound came. The second time it was farther away and I got up to look but it was cloudy and I couldn't see anything. Sort of freaky.

I'm in Southern Ontario. Did anyone else hear anything?

Are they having an air show? maybe they were practicing/joy-riding at night?

my second thought is that it was military aircraft chasing down alien ships

That was my first thought.

We were suppose to have come close to Jupiter. But I don't think that would cause the sound.

Somebody in WNY mentioned a very low flying, loud plane last night. That was all the way down in Chautauqua County, though. Odd.

Well, I live on the West Coast of the N. American continent, so no.

But I was wondering how anything could be OT in TAO?

recalling my v. fuzzy chemisty, sound does not travel through a vaccum or space right. in case you were implying something happened in space and we heard it.

Hm. Well no. But I have heard that kind of sound before and I'm in NYC. It was jet fighters in the weeks after Sept. 11. Also, I've heard them and not seen anything if it was cloudy. They were above the clouds, but still crazy loud.

Happy with my DH, 2 kids, dog, fish, and frogs

Hmmm, yeah we had military jets do a flyover back in June and it was freakishly LOUD. Awful. My cat went missing for a week afterwards. So it is very likely that is what you heard.

How close are you to the border?

Sure did, about three of them. I was on an air force base that flies F-15s

It does sort of sound like what you're describing, and they're loud enough to shake buildings. Even idling and not flying they're crazy loud.

I live near an airport where the take-off path is right over my house when there is inclement weather (fog and rain), so the clouds always make the jumbo jets sound like they are on a direct path to my living room (and they fly sooooo low over my house). This is also a flight path for National Guard jets, so even if I did hear something like that, it wouldn't register. These planes rattle my windows and are loud enough to interrupt conversations. It was probably just military flying below the cloud deck or a large commercial jet. The clouds really amplify the sound. It must be scary, though, if you're not used to it!!

I did, but it probably wasn't the same thing since I'm in the NW US. We live in a flight path, but it's usually small planes since the closest airport is tiny. Or it's the Life Flight helicopter.

But there's an Air Force base not far away and we get jets going by alot. Which is what happened last night.

Hunh. Yes. When my DH picked me up from an event, he told me that an airplane flew low over our house, and he and DD were actually scared it might crash (it was so low and loud). He said it was a serious plane, not just a prop job (we have a tiny airport in town, for two seaters and such, nothing more - this was definitely not one of those).

We're over an hour from Albany, the nearest major airport.

I am unsure where the nearest military bases are.

Ditto here. They're especially loud on a cloudy day when the cloud ceiling is lower. My fave was when in college, the landing pattern for the AFB went right over the university and the afterburners would drown out lectures.

It must have been a F-15 or something similar. Low cloud cover amplifying the sound, very interesting. We have a small airport close by but I've never heard anything like the sound I heard on Tuesday night. Definitely not a helicopter or a commercial plane. We aren't close to a border. Lake Erie, Ontario and Huron are between me and the US. Pretty scary sound alright!

On the evening of 9/11/01 we heard loud jets going by overhead. It was a little freaky because we had been hearing how all airplanes were grounded and we wouldn't hear planes, but these were clearly military jets anyway, just because of the noise. And that's the last time I remember hearing really loud jets.

This. About 6 months ago, my toddler woke up at 2am one night, and while I was getting her back down, I regularly heard what sounded like a 747 landing next door. The sounds came about 10 minutes apart, and after about the 6th one I realized it had to be coming from the airport. I am about 5 miles from the airport in Indy and one of the flight patterns goes right over my house (in the summer with the windows open, I often dream of plane crashes because I hear the planes in my sleep and that's how my brain interprets it into my dreams.) My dad happens to work overnights for FedEx at the airport, I asked him about it, he said they were military planes heading out.

lol... yes, but I live RIGHT outside of a military base and directly between its flight path to a local air base, so its a common sound here.
