She's factoring polynomials.

when we did X to the 4th - 9 we got (X squared + 3)(x squared + 3)

Here's the one we're stuck on....

-16 + a to the 12th

(a^6+4)(a^6-4)

and if you keep going

(a^3-2)(a^3+2)(a^6+4)

For the examples you're giving, where you're factoring a^b-c and b is even, your answer is (a^(b/2)+sqrt(c))(a^(b/2)-sqrt(c))

Thank you VERY much.  Now that I see the anser it makes total sense and I can show her how to do it.  I can usually figure it out with the examples they give, but sometimes the way I was taught to do things conflicts with how she was taught and I just end up confusing her.
