Yes, we do lots of charitable stuff throughout the year, and particularly at Christmastime, but that's not the point of the "RACK" thing -- those are just silly little ideas to brighten someone's day. But thanks for judging my good deeds as not good enough! thumb.gif

Point out to me, please, where I "judged" your deeds as not good enough? headscratch.gif

Telling me what I should do "instead" of what I had planned to do indicates to me that my plan wasn't sufficient in your opinion. But whatever, enjoy your holidays.

Let's see, another favorite part of Christmas for me is making crafts with my kids. There are so many incredibly cute and cheap ideas on Pinterest, so the kids and I have been enjoying breaking out the q-tips, paint, popsicle sticks, etc. and making cute little crafts.

Oh! I almost forgot! I like getting/making hot chocolate, and driving around looking at all the lights/decorated houses! DD has been asking when we can go, and I told her we really need to wait until closer to time, so that more people have their decorations up. But we do point out the different houses to them that are decorated now.

I saw the cutest idea for that on this blog. After her kids were ready for bed, she surprised them with a ticket to the Minivan Express, and had popcorn and cocoa waiting in the car for them to snack on as they drove around looking at lights. I'm so stealing that idea!

I know, so freaking cute. If you click through to the link for the PDF of the tickets, there are more cute ideas, like to have the kids line up outside the car in their PJs and slippers and have a parent "conductor" hole-punch their ticket as they climb aboard. Like you, we'll wait a couple weeks so that there will be plenty of lights to look at, but I'm so excited!! I just printed our tickets on photo paper and they look awesome. (I used the ones that say "Christmas Express" instead of "Minivan Express" since we don't have a minivan -- both types are on the PDF.)

Favorite part of xmas?

I love the thread in this forum after talking about what you received, esp from MIL!!

I love doing xmas for our kids now. For years I have dreaded xmas= maybe because I worked retail in hs, and part of college so I saw the bad part of xmas. Also my bday is 12/24. I remember growing up always having a wonderful xmas morning and great holiday but the stress my parents put each other under leading to it was crazy.

we have a split family tradition around christmas. ex really loves christmas and the whole magical thing. he and dd are fantasy literature fans and share just love magic. she loves his surprises and traditions so much that she has not given up on santa even at 10.

so i decided to change the dynamics of our christmas so that it does not compete with ex's. plus it made it easier not having money to really buy dd a present. so dd spends christmas eve and part of xmas day with ex. so xmas day itself for us is pretty laid back.

what i DO do with dd are a whole bunch of xmas outdoors activities. i am not a crafty person - her dad is. so they do their thing. there are a bunch of free activities around us. so we do all that. so really our christmas begins around the middle of november. we are out 3 nights a week.

dd and i both love singing but we dont have great voices. so we attend carol singing events and this year in exchange of work trade we are taking part in two carol singing activities in the community (both taught by a professional voice coach where we spend the first half hour learning how to breathe and enunciate). gosh though!!! dd makes me feel OLD. at the end of two practises dd has memorised all the words of the carols, got the general idea of the music so watches the director better than any one else. she is the youngest in both groups. music has always been part of our christmas experience.

for some reason xmas is always a very grey day - year after year. so its become a tradition after dd comes home to walk the empty streets nursing hot pumpkin soy milk and enjoying the emptiness, greyness and the beauty of rolling leaves and barking dogs. in fact we just happen to start this at dd's first xmas and it was then that i discovered the beauty of grey days and and empty streets so its become a part of our lives.

however our traditions are changing. we did the hot chocolate and drive to the lights and hot chocolate or tea and walk our own decorated neighborhood. but dd is kinda getting out of this. in fact at dd grows older i notice quite a few of our traditions are changing. this was our first halloween where she went with friends so i wasnt the parent taking them. this year dd wasnt too interested in the mall anymore. we used to love being there window shopping and just watching people and seeing odd and specialty stuff just for the season. the lights too she wasnt interested in till she found out her friends had not gone to those particular lights so she wants to take them.

this is the first year in our new neighborhood. we will be having friends over for christmas brunch. i love getting ready for the meal because dd and her friends just love helping and cleaning. we had a great TG. dd and friends helped with cleaning and chopping and cooking the meal. this is our first year of vegan TG and xmas to respect dd's wishes - so its been exciting. the neighborhood kids lead v. typical lives so they couldnt believe we could have a feast without meat. it will be our first xmas without egg nog. it might possibly be our first holiday with no sugar as dd tries to give up 'cruel food'. she's been struggling ... so we shall see.

this is the year when tradition no longer involves just mother dd, but mother and a bunch of rambunctious kids.

We make gingerbread cookies and the kids decorate them.

Also the kids get new PJs.

I like making photo calendars for the next year.

Mmm, sounds like a good tradition... I can't wait until my DS is old enough to help with cookies!

We went to see "A Christmas Carol" yesterday, which is always a lot of fun.

How fun! I always watch the George C. Scott version of that on TV, but no one else in my family is into it so that's my own personal little tradition, lol.

I'm taking the kids to see The Nutcracker next weekend. It's a condensed 45-minute children's version. I'm excited!

Favourite things about Xmas..... seeing the lights, and xmas day seeing the delight on my babies faces as they open gifts. And most importantly spending time with our families!

Crafting! I love making ornaments with the kids for the tree. I love going to the tree farm to find a wonderful tree. I love how it looks all lit up. I love the music.

Last week DH took the girls to get the tree while I used the time to wrap gifts while they were away.

We put the tree up, fluffed it out, DH and the girls put up lights while I unpacked the holiday box. Then after sweeping up the pine needles etc, putting on the peanuts xmas on the ipod..DH and I took a step back while the girls fished out ornaments and put them up. It was a blast just hearing them say- hey we BOTH made these in preschool, 1st grade etc.  DH and I put up the "our first xmas together" ornamnent and then made hot chocolate etc.

This week (we live in suburbs of chicago) DH has to work today downtown so the girls and I are taking the train in to see the windows at Macys/old fields building as well as the tree in the walnut room. Then he will meet us for dinner.

The weekend before xmas we will go to the musuem of science and industry for our annual treck to the Xmas around the world.
