DH and I just finished reading "How to talk so your kids will listen..." We've been putting some of these techniques to use, particularly to avoid a tantrum. In short, when a tantrum is coming on, state the emotion for the child, summarize what you see is the cause of the problem and offer a solution. Yesterday we were on the way out the door when the phone rang. I dealt with DD's shoes and sock while DH answered the phone (my mom).
Me: "Ohhh, that looks frustrating. It can be hard to get socks on over your feet. Why don't I put them over your toes, and you pull them the rest of the way on?"
In the background, I hear:
DH: "You sound very anxious. Yes, it's hard not knowing what we're going to be doing next year. We're anxious, too. We promise to let you know just as soon as we know anything."
Two tantrums: *poof*
