I feel so terrible! I went to playgroup today. I purposely sat in the shade to protect DD (because she breaks out terribly from sunscreen) and thought I kept an eye on her, checking for exposure (probably not as much as I should have... because we were in the shade).

I get home tonight and she's sunburned Not bad... but she's pink and it has heat coming from it. To top it off, I discovered it when my mother was here. She proceeded to basically tell me I was the worst mother in the world and that I was borderline abusive for letting her get burnt... I should have known better.

: Karen, wife to my : Mad Scientist and mama to :Emma (10-21-03).
I spend my days : : and seeing how many smilies I can fit in my siggy.

aw...
just get out the aloe, and remind yourself that you are a good mama
-put what your mother said to you out of your head.
you're far from abusive - you were only thinking of your dd when you decided to forgo sunscreen & try to just keep her shaded to keep her from breaking out.

have you tried any sun-protective clothing as an alternative to sunscreen?

Thanks so much ladies... I was having a very down moment (I'm sure AF doesn't help). I was so hurt that my mother would make those type accusations to me. I had a long talk with my DH about it, and we've both come to the conclusion that she more than likely has a lot of guilt (because I'll be honest... she was a rotten mom... she was very abusive both physically and mentally.... so her remarks should not come as a surprise) and it makes her feel better to beat me down.

Penelope - thank you SOOOOO much for such kind words. I DO love my baby girl more than life itself I can't believe that she got burned either! I about died when I took her dress off tonight. It's not too bad... like I said, it's pink and has a bit of heat, but she doesn't seem uncomfortable by it. I put this aloe salve on it (the witch doctor on my dad's island gave it to me when I was down there and burned the crap out of myself) and it works wonders (I had to slather Jeff's bald head too LOL) Maybe cuz Magnus was covered more?? Who knows... I guess if this is the worst thing that happens, I'll come out okie dokie in life.

Thanks again! It's friends like you that keep me reassured that I'm okay at this mommy thing

What your mom said was not helpful and maybe next time you could say just that. I have used that with my FIL who doesn't really know how to relate to people at all. I just say that is not helpful and he stops. I hear comments people have made in my head alot and have been trying to just shake off that negative energy. Sometimes I get mad and snark right back but for the most part I just let it go. They are ignorant and don't deserve my energy.

I am sorry your little one got burned but it doesn't sound too bad. Sorry she can't use sunscreen but maybe sun safe clothes would help, even a coverup would probably be enough. I have swimsuits from sunclothingetc dot com that also carries clothes. The suits are cute and they totally work! I also got some stuff from solartex dot com.
