The son of a good friend of mine could use some prayers (or whatever positive energy you have to offer) right now.

Her 7 yo son is in the hospital with a raging kidney infection. He was born with a severe form of spina bifida - basically his entire middle from his belly button on down never developed properly - he has a wide assortment of problems from not being sure if he was even a boy at birth, to never being able to walk, poop, or pee like most of us. Last month he had his 14th surgery - they fashioned a bladder for him out of a piece of his intestines, made an actual bellybutton for him & put in a stoma so he could urinate. He was so happy that he wouldn't have to wear diapers anymore! Anyway...

Yesterday he was hospitalized with an infection in his new bladder. Last night he ran a fever of almost 106 & today they are still having a hard time keeping it under 104. Please say a prayer that the antibiotics kick in very soon and that his only kidney does not get damaged because of all this!

He's a very sweet and bright boy who loves everybody and somehow smiles thru it all!

Thank you!

Thanks, all. I just AIM'd her again - his fever has not broken yet. She's very worried - the waiting & wondering if these antibiotics are doing any good at all is soooo hard!

Update: His fever is down slightly. It's now hovering at about 103.5. Which is much better than almost 106!

Keep the good vibes comin'! This little guy needs all the help he can get! His Mom tells me he's very mad right now, which is actually a good thing! His kidney is still producing urine - albeit very cloudy, yucky looking stuff, but it's hangin' in there!

UPDATE:

I got an e-mail from my friend yesterday...

Please keep Joseph in your prayers. He is fighting a bad infection - and he is
fighting hard. We thought yesterday we were past the worst, because his fever
spike was considerably lower than it had been. About an hour ago it spiked up to
105.6 again. We have just about gotten it under control with cold cloths.
Monday night it was 105.9, Tuesday mid-morning it was 105.1, then yesterday morning about 3:30 or 4:00 it hit a high of "ONLY" 103.8, so we thought we were on the way toward normal. We joked that my birthday present was a fever-free day, and
we nearly had it. (the 21st).

The doctors say it is not unusual for these spikes to occur 48-72 hours after
starting the correct antibiotic. We started the antibiotic around 6:00 Monday
morning, so we are still within that 72-hour period.

The Dr. at Hopkins has been conferring with the Dr. here. Both feel we are on the right track and that we should stay here in the local hospital until his lab tests are infection free for 48 hours. Then we will go to Baltimore for 4-8 days to remove the tubes and start the process of making his new bladder functional which we intended to start today. If the tubes are removed before the infection is really gone, it could start the whole infection process over again.

Joseph is pretty worn out from all this. Yesterday was a very good day and he
really wants to go home. He asks really big questions for a 7-year-old.

Friday Update: His fever is normal again - as of now 12 hours.
