I got an e-mail from my friend yesterday...
Please keep Joseph in your prayers. He is fighting a bad infection - and he is
fighting hard. We thought yesterday we were past the worst, because his fever
spike was considerably lower than it had been. About an hour ago it spiked up to
105.6 again. We have just about gotten it under control with cold cloths.
Monday night it was 105.9, Tuesday mid-morning it was 105.1, then yesterday morning about 3:30 or 4:00 it hit a high of "ONLY" 103.8, so we thought we were on the way toward normal. We joked that my birthday present was a fever-free day, and
we nearly had it. (the 21st).
The doctors say it is not unusual for these spikes to occur 48-72 hours after
starting the correct antibiotic. We started the antibiotic around 6:00 Monday
morning, so we are still within that 72-hour period.
The Dr. at Hopkins has been conferring with the Dr. here. Both feel we are on the right track and that we should stay here in the local hospital until his lab tests are infection free for 48 hours. Then we will go to Baltimore for 4-8 days to remove the tubes and start the process of making his new bladder functional which we intended to start today. If the tubes are removed before the infection is really gone, it could start the whole infection process over again.
Joseph is pretty worn out from all this. Yesterday was a very good day and he
really wants to go home. He asks really big questions for a 7-year-old.
Friday Update: His fever is normal again - as of now 12 hours.
