I saw a thread going around about a MDC get together in Door County. Door County sounds lovely, but I thought some of you West Coasters might like to have a get together of our own. The Oregon Coast pops out. Just thought I'd put it out there!

I'm another one in the Sacramento area. Bay Area would be do-able for me.

Yuck. I just said do-able. What the heck is wrong with me?

I'd love to do the Oregon coast. The Bay area would be cool but way too long of a drive for me.

I feel torn. I love the bay area because I am already here, but the Oregon Coast would be a change of scene! I guess majority rules! We are a ways away and maybe we can come to a mutual location.lol

Ditto.

Sunset bay is nice: camping, beach (chilly, but it's a bay so it could be worse), tidepools...We saw orcas there last summer.

Hi there I don't mean to butt in, but I noticed only one of you mentioned the far north coast. I am up here in humboldt on the north coast and if you are looking for a get away place I would highly recomend my neck of the woods. It is right in between the bay area and Oregon and it is a nice drive from Sacremento. The community is friendly and very open mined and there is always lots to do. There's the beach, hiking in the woods, river to ocean trails, great parks, camping, fishing, tons of dancing and if you come at the beginning of the month the first weekend of the month offers Arts Alive! All the local artists and performers come out and show their stuff. This last weekend I watched fire dancers, belly dancers, capeiorra(spg?)dancers, not to mention blue grass bands, and 80's wannabe pop bands.

I would love to join in. We're in Los Angeles so whether it's the Oregon coast or Bay Area, it's gonna be a long drive for us.

The bay area is a little closer, though!

Camping sounds like a lot of fun, I could probably talk my dh into it.

The best time of year to visit is in the spring and late summer/early fall. If you visit in late spring/early to mid summer it might be nice, but it might also be really foggy. June and July are hit and miss. But right now it is gorgeously warm and sunny. WE also have the most beautiful Indian Summer up here. My favorite months are May and August/September

I could go for N. Ca, sure, why not? August would be better for me, but May would work too.

Alright my official vote is for the North Coast , preferably May. August would work too if the majority voted that way! This is going to be great, and I've never been to Humboldt so I jazzed about a visit!

Oregon would be great - we could actually get there. Camping would be great, we have no money. My kids and I are footloose and fancy-free this summer. No obligations at all. Fun, fun, fun. No DH though. Bummer - he's pretty cool, too.

Mama, homeschooler, midwife. DD (13yo), DS (11yo), DD (8yo), DD (3yo), somebody new coming in November 2013.

yes, when I mentioned N. Cali I was thinking humbolt or mendo area. I second that the best time there would be late summer or spring. I spent most of July, August and September there one year and it wasn't even remotely nice until September. Isn't Mendo supposed to be warmer and sunnier than Humbolt? Or is that only inland?

We visit Mendocino every summer and it's hit or miss with the weather. Despite the weather I love it and would definately be up for a trip this summer/spring!

I still want to go! Spring sounds more possible for us. Late summer is full of family vacations and such.

I know nothing about the North Coast, so have we decided on an exact location yet?

What are a few of the possibilities?

Another vote for the Oregon Coast.

While I love and appreciate the Northern CA coast, I love and appreciate the Oregon coast more - the long open beaches are truly remarkable and accessible and a good number of non-strip mall towns are so welcoming: Manzanita, Arch Cape, Cannon Beach, Gearhart, and a bit further south, Yachats.

Based on the replies so far (many from CA and WA), OR looks like a possible middle ground.

That'd please DW and I so much!

This is fun... maybe some of the Door County folks will want to come!

Oregon does sound like middle ground. I have never been to the Oregon Coast, but I hear it is lovely. My sisters live in Ashland and have told me all about the coast and its beauty! Spring is best for us! May or June would be great! Is camping our only possibility or are there any hotels/motels in the area? What is everyones preference?

My DW and I were married last fall in Cannon Beach (one reason for my love of the OR coast!) and we found that the area provided a whole weekend of fun for friends from far and near. Some people camped, some stayed at hotels and motels, some rented houses. Everyone LOVED their experiences and many are committed to a return visit. Have a look at the links from the local Chamber of Commerce website and you'll see why:

http://www.cannonbeach.org/

You can also order (or view immediately as pdf) a free Cannon Beach Magazine via the site. A great resource with beautiful photos!

The summer season (typically June-September) is the most expensive and busiest time of the year. Late spring is more affordable and usually fairly quiet.

If if we don't have a MDC gathering there, you'll want to visit at some point!

There are a few photos of our wedding at Ecola State Park linked in DW's signature - see mtnsunshinemama.
