My guess is no because of it being "plant matter" but you probably want to ask the postal service. Do they have a website?

hmm, I found this: www.canadapost.ca (no direct link, in popup)

Senders should determine import restrictions from the country's authorities before posting:

* Alcoholic beverages
* Animals and animal products
* Boxes that formerly contained prohibited or hazardous goods
* Food for human or animal consumption*
* Hides
* Pharmaceutical products**
* Skins
* Tobacco and tobacco products
* Vegetable and other plant products
* Weapons
* Wool.

USA admits duty-free unsolicited genuine personal gifts not exceeding $100US in value (excluding tobacco products and alcohol-based perfume).

* All commercial shipments of food to the United States must be preceded by a Prior Notice of shipment. This includes mail items containing food for human or animal consumption, dietary supplements, vitamins and food additives or colour. Articles of food which have been non-commercially prepared by an individual in his own residence and sent to another individual as a non-commercial gift are exempt from the requirement for a Prior Notice. More information on the Prior Notice can be obtained from the USA Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Yay, looks like it's a go.

Yes, you can send homemade food through the mail.
Now, if that were a commercial jar of Smuckers, that would be breaking the law.

I just shipped loose herbal tea and it made it through fine, despite DH's worries that someone at the border would try to smoke it.

They probably mean raw wool. But, you'd think they would have the smarts to indicate that. All those poor little grannies sending contraband hats and mittens to their grandbabies.

I've received homemade salsa and Saskatoon blueberry pie filling from a friend in Canada.

Yep, so long as it's homemade...but if you send a chocolate bar through the mail, they'll send it back with a VERY nasty notice about bioterrorism and threats to send the FBI to get you....so just don't make your packaging look too professional.

I think the rule is as long as it is cooked, and wouldn't introduce a new species of bug or other sort of problem. When I was in South Africa, the people we stayed with made us fresh guava preserves and we took a bunch back with us

Due with number 5 in August. We do all that crunchy stuff.

That sounds like the voice of experience talking.

my favorite tea store warned me not to send their tea loose through the mail. They offered to send it for me instead cause they had the right customs forms.

IMO, don't. Or if you do, use someone else's address. that's what my grandma did when she sent my uncle cross country some wine. It never showed. LOL! (he was a sheriff at the time too)
