I was living in Chile at that time and wasn't a member, and I hear people sometimes say "before the crash" or "after the crash", so I'm wondering, what is the crash? what happened?

mods: I hope it's ok to post this here. If not, let me know and I can post it in Q & S, but I figured Cynthia and all the mods are busy enough so having to go into this story will probably take time up that could otherwise be spent ansering more "important" questions.

thanks

Oh, me too!!! I see people mentioning this in passing, but never explain it. I feel silly asking in case it's a secret hand-shake type situation.

I have wondered too - I had a username in 2001 when I was pregnant with my oldest daughter and I remember coming back after she was born and my name didn't work anymore - I always wondered if I had done something wrong!

Hmm, I had to re register once too, maybe 02? I'd have to see my post to get the date, but I can't really remember what this crash was, or why people refer to before and after it. I hope someone answers because now I'm curious.

There was a huge crash september 2001 it was somewhere right in there...it was after 9-11 as I remember a lot of people were posting that day.

The boards completely shut down for over a month, just a bit of the threads survived.

The boards were completely redone and everyone had to sign up again.

Yes, the board was much smaller in those days and wasn't equipped to handle the huge influx in traffic.

There was a MDC chat set up on yahoo before that happened, which people had been using to chat and people were in there a lot. Also, during that time period a board was set up on ezboard by members and those that had been using the yahoo chat were directed there.

MDC was back up in November...as you probably noticed from so many November 2001 join dates.

I know it was before I joined MDC. If you're really interested, check out the members list and see when most of the "old timers" joined.

I remember the crash. I had a diffrent username with about 100 posts, and had to make up a new one. It took me a while, I lurked for a while, not knowing if I should join again. But, in March 2002 I found out I was pregnant with #2, so I rejoined!

Yes, the board was so small then. I think 'knew' everyone.

I remember it was very soon after 9/11.

Lost everything, started over and, worst thing of all, we didn't have MDC for weeks.

Was it really before Sept 11th? Maybe I didn't visit for a few days since Sept 10th the therapy dog at my dd school was struck and killed by a car while the entire school was outside...then Sept 11 the next day...I also didn't post as much then...because I post so much now! I just remember it being gone forever!

No, it was definitely right after 9/11. All the first page was threads about the attacks, then nothing.

Well, something, but elsewhere.

It wasnt because of 9/11. We had a week or two after 9/11, lots of chatter, lots of angry feelings, then the board crashed (not because of the angry feelings)

Right, 9/11 didn't *cause* the crash, I think because it was such a horrible and memorable event, we associate the two.

Hey, is anyone else thinking this thread is making them feel like an old person.

(old person voice) I remember back in the day when we had the crash.....(Think Homer Simpson's Dad's voice )

I took that crash personally! I had been on a due-date board and we were all just starting to have our babies (or maybe were at the tail end), when the crash came. I needed so badly for support in failing to have the VBAC I desperately wanted, but the only people I knew who would understand how I felt were on Mothering...and it was gone. Obviously, I got over it, and then I finally did get my HBA2C, so no lingering resentment!

Homeschooling mom to four kids, ages 18, 18, 10, and 6.
