Sorry, I'm still confused and should have used clearer wording :
Do the women who submit their art receive compensation or do all proceeds go to the administration of MDC?

Yah, I am confused too. What do you mean "support MDC?" You're going to give the boards money? To what end? Will this keep the google ads away?

: I appreciate the energy that is currently flowing around here to keep Google at bay but the impression that I am getting from reading the threads in Questions & Suggestions is that so much of this stuff has been tried before.

I guess the question for me and this is me the management/organization consultant speaking (not me the Mama) but is it even feasible to try and do the level of fundraising needed to keep the Google ads away? Guess I am wondering if all this energy couldn't be used towards helping our fellow Mamas out this holiday season that is just around the corner.

In any event, I am happy to see the energy but wondering if its practical. Not trying to be a downer, so I will exit this thread.

We're going to give the money to MDC, hoping that it keeps the Ads away..

Not being a downer, sweetie!! I'm hoping that the books will be avalible by then, and if it's not enough, perhaps then it will go to helping the Mamas directly.

Greenie, is that a yes to both questions? The mamas will be compensated for their art/words or is it all going to MDC administration?

Not to be nitpicky... :nana:

Neat idea!

I wonder, how much money does MDC need to avoid having to go Google?

Did the cookbook idea ever take off? Is it dead in the water, or still in development, or did it happen and I just missed it?

At the very least, thanks for reminding me that I've been meaning to purchase a subscription. Just got me a shiny new 6 month PPP sub.

The mamas (including me) are donating their artwork to help Mothering.. The way I see it, you don't get $$, but you get your work out there, and that leads to more people seeing it and being familiar with you and your work.

Did that make any since at all??

Having sold for a while now on cafepress, I know that I hardly make anything off the sales. I'm not sure what the markup will be but it would be nice to examine other printing options that would net more $$ for Mothering, is there a way to do this other than cafepress? I know there are other printers out there that do the 'one book at a time' thing. Any one have leads on any others/prices?

If it's a book, you may want to look into http://www.lulu.com

I know of several woman that make a living off of selling self-published books through this company.

It's a thought!

Will this cut down on the ads?

If not, i'd rather the money go to the holiday helper MINs or something. Or have the mama contributors get some compensation.

I think that's a great idea!! We could definitley do that..

I haven't had any submissions yet, though... Just anxious!!

ETA: I was thinking about this, and we don't even know how much that would be needed to prevent the Google ads. If it's an astrnomical ammount (which would be better served by everyone buying subscriptions) then the book should definitley go to help the Holiday Helpers.

i think the idea of the $ going towards holiday helper threads would make me more inclined to buy it/donate something.

it just doesnt seem like keeping ads off of a message board would be...worth it.

The cookbook idea has been floating around for nearly 5 years since I first introduced the idea in early 2002.

The cost to create the cookbook far outway the money it would generate.

Potty--what options have you explored? Surely this can't be the case, as I've seen churches and small community organizations sell cookbooks...I'm sure if they lost money from it, they wouldn't do it.

No one would expect a hardcover with color photos. Just maybe a soft cover spiral...

I love that people are wanting to find other ways to make MDC profit, and I think the idea of an art book or a cook book are nice.

Unfortunatly, I just don't think any of this is going to equal what google ads will in temrs of $$$.

The fact is that a board this size requires ALOT of money to manage. No, they have not said how much, but I don't think they really need to. This is a business. Mothering is a bussiness and the boards are an offshoot of that. It takes money (and lots of it) to run a business.

We can sell cookbooks and bumber stickers and small paid subscriptions till the cows come home, but in reality, we are never going to raise thousands of dollars EVERY MONTH like to google ads will.

I think the enthusiasm is remarkable and it is great to see people working together for a good cause, but I really think it might turn out to be a whole lot of effort for a small amount of financial return.

Okay, but serious question. Why do we want "MDC" to profit?

Like I said, I'd rather the money go to real mamas, not a company....or so it would seem.

Profit was the wrong word...My point was that MDC should be ablet to meet its operating costs. The cost of the webspace, the cost to pay the admin etc. It all costs money. I think that is what the google ads are trying to do...pay for day to day expences.

If MDC makes a profit I don't really care. Like I said earlier, they are a business.

I think any money made from sales of books etc should be to cover expences, not to be as extra. I would much rather see money raised from the cafe press store go to other families who need it than towards MDC, but I'm not part of the fundraising so I don't really get a vote.

I just don't want to have Google ads.. but then again, those who don't want to see the ads can just pay not to see them.

I'm all for helping Families in need. If the contributing Artist Mamas want that to be the benefit of their work, then awesome. I'm all for what the Mamas want.
