The class is Human Behavior in the Social Environment. The paper can be any type of paper about any topic having to do with human behavior. It is 15 pages long. I really need help brainstorming! I have a few ideas at the top of my head....

Attachment parenting and something about the benefits of it
The horrors of circumcision (MGM)
Breastfeeding in American Culture and the attitude surrounding it
Gender acceptance and equality
Vaccines (why you should avoid them and what most people dont know)
Pregnancy and Birth-the negativity surrounding it in our culture

Do any of these ideas sound good? If so which ones and what books should I use. ANY other topic ideas would be great as well.

Let's see I've done the circumcision issue but not for HBSE. I'd focus (personally) on taboos relating to breastfeeding and childbirth. (Ie: breastfeeding in public, the need to medicalize every tiny detail of childbirth, access to nutrition and care, etc) Really all the topics are good, so you may just need to pick the one that feels right to you and go with it.

Good luck.

I like this one, Pregnancy and Birth-the negativity surrounding it in our culture. Also, mommy wars might be a good topic.

I like the pregnancy and birth topic, lots has been written on this. You should start with Robbie Davis-Floyd's Birth as an American Rite of Passage and work from there. There's lots published about the "scientification" of motherhood, also, as a tie-in. Ooooh, I wish I were writing this paper. LOL

This may not be an issue for you, but when I had to do research papers as a mama, I actually looked to see what I could find the most info on, and THEN narrow down my topic. In my pre-mama days I would go with what was most interesting, but that changed once time was extremely limited! For example, while there may be a lot written on the mommy wars, how much can you actually find on that in journals vs. articles in a magazine. I don't know-- I'm just giving that as an example.

Wow thanks everyone!

I think you are right that the pregnancy and childbirth one is a good idea. I think I am going to go with that-especially because I have a lot of reading material for that. (in doula training)
Any other ideas are welcomed.
