I live in Indiana and we are getting ready to amend our State Constitution to ban same sex marriage for good and it TRULY TRULY embarrasses and angers me. Like make me wanna move out of this state embarrassed. How can we as a state, as a body of people, humans-dictate who loves who and if its valid or not?

We cant even get heterosexual marriages right and we wanna ban someone elses union????: : :

I knew it was coming-we are a way conservative state but I did hold onto a "maybe" and alas we have fallen in to something IMHO really ugly.

I love many homosexual people and feel like they are most deserving of acknowledgement and it just sucks......everyday there is an article in the paper and everyday it makes me more and more angry.....where is MY government because this isnt it.....

Just had to post about it....

I'm with you, sister. I have thoughts on this subject, but most involve the evils of organized religion and not all here can handle it.

Happy families for ALL....not just the procreating heterosexual ones. :

Yeah, well, here in Michigan, we've banned same-sex marriage AND affirmative action. Yet the powers-that-be scratch their little heads about the "brain drain" the state's going through.

I just don't understand WHY????

I know that makes me sound stupid because they have to have a reason, (not that I'm saying its a valid one) but I can't see the argument.. I just can't.

My best friend in the world has been with his boyfriend for nearly 15 years, committed, monogomous, loving... they're absolutely a joy to be around, and when you're with them you truly feel like you're in the presence of something special and magical... and it makes me sick to my stomach that I could go out tomorrow meet some random guy fly to Vegas and get married... but that Jason and Trent can't... WTF?

The sanctity of marriage my @%^!!!

yes....we just did this in tennessee - what a proud day :

the thing that really made me mad is that same sex marriage was already illegal here - but 85% of tennessee went ahead and changed our constitution too (i was shocked by the very high number). during campaigning time, the proponents for the constitutional change made it seem like if the change wasn't voted for that it would legalize same sex marriage. it was all very underhanded and spiteful - and yet - why can't the general populous educate themselves???

this issue always makes me think of how our country totally goes against "separation of church and state." i'm in kentucky and it was banned a few years ago. the whole thing makes me sick. sick! sick! sick! i'm pretty sure gay marriage is an issue of the state and not the church.

Yup. I left MI for college and after law school I tried to move back and make a life for mysef and my son. My whole family is there. But, alas, I really felt like I went backwards in time and went back to NYC. I can't imagine living in MI now. It's truly awful

In how many states in the US is same sex marriage is legal? I didn't think there were many (if any) that actually allowed same sex marriage.

I don't get it either. I hate the comments about how legalizing same sex marriage will somehow change the meaning of marriage for all the hetero couples out there.
And my grandma said she was opposed to same sex marriage because if it were legal, no one would have babies anymore : She got an earful of MY opinion! lol

And anyone know if same sex marriage are legal in canada? I KNOW that they have same sex common law partners, but can same sex couples actually get married?

I'm unmarried, as a silent protest against this lack of legal same sex marriage thing. (not silent- when people ask when dp and I are getting married, they get an earful. lol)

Same thing happened in Wisconsin this past fall. So we moved.

The relocation was a long time coming, but I was so furious that it made the decision easier to leave. Though we just moved to another state with similar crap in it's constitution.

It makes me sad, angry and just plain : .

It's legal here :

I roll my eyes at states that havne't made it legal, but I want to vomit at the ones who voted to make it ILLEGAL.

And I want to meet the people who did it and smack them around a little

It's so good to hear others outraged by this - here in TX few seem to agree with me.

Marriage (in any form) is a celebration of love. Making marriage illegal certainly seems to be about hate. Love is what makes life worth living. (To quote bumper stickers...) Hate is not a family value.

I've thought about moving but, frankly, odds are long that wherevere we choose won't do the same damn thing, so we're sticking it out. Working from within and all that.

Sadly though, same sex marriage is only recognized as a legal union in THREE countries worldwide

Here is a state-by-state breakdown of legislation that recognizes same-sex relationships.

It's truly pitiful.

Does anyone know if education levels in certain states have anything to do with these bills passing? I see sortof a trend........the less progressive states are the ones that generally have these antisamesex bills. Am I wrong?

It sickens me too....... I can't even have this discussion with certain people because it's one of my hot buttons and I just have to laugh at people's ignorance.

Take a look at the maps. Nearly all states are passing the bills.

Thanks for posting this, and thanks to frog for posting the info on the states. I'm American, born and raised. But the more I learn about Canada vs. the USA, the happier I am that dp (Canadian) moved me to Canada!

California did it over 5 years ago, Oregon a few years back too. I think Vermont is still safe as far as the US goes.
