should I let them know I overheard?

Dh has been working for days laying brick, he reused some of the old brick and the new brick is a wee bit smaller...so it's not perfect but it's far from terrible. Dh just went to pick something up and they walked threw our backyard, I'm sitting inside and could hear them clearly. I went out and was going to say "hey who's that back hear saying how terrible things look, oh it's you guys" but they'd already gone out the other side.

I know they'll be back, should I keep the peace or put him(it was the H doin' the talking) on the spot?

I would put them on the spot, because I love to make mean people feel uncomfortable :

Plus they were trespassing. Karma.

I'm a bad mood. I probably would have said something I'd regret later like "If you want to talk s*** about my patio do it in your own d*** yard!"

I don't recommend that.

well, I'm pmsing, have a bottle of wine w/ my name written all over it, and the night is young

He wasn't talking loud, our windows are paper thin (90 years old) and he's just in general a jealous ua violation.

Just an example, he thinks he better than dh cause he has a masters degree but can't stand it that dh makes twice as much as he does. Dh is a blue collar worker (firefighter).

Man, I'm cranky too! What's going on with everyone? I'd go out back when they're out there and say to DH "So and so sure have let their backyard go to the crapper, huh?"

I don't care what he thinks of the patio, it's that he had the audacity to talk shit about the job that dh worked so hard on.....later he'll be over to drink beer on said patio and blow smoke up dhs ass.

Sounds like he's just jealous of a fabulous patio and needs to make himself feel better for being inadequate.

Maybe when you see neighbor and are chatting, keep asking him "Don't you think dh did a great job? We know the bricks aren't quite the same size, but it just came out so great regardless, don't you think? Oh wait-what was I thinking? You said you didn't like it when you were back here the other day and thought we weren't home. Sorry."

Maybe you can go back there and start talking REALLY LOUDLY to DH while he's working about how terrible the neighbors looked when you saw them outside checking out your patio!

I'd be mad, but wouldn't do anything now, as I wouldn't want dh to find out/hear what was said.

It must be the day for "little comments". DD told me that "Hannah said that her dad thinks *real school* is better than homeschooling because you can make friends at *real school*". You'd better believe that if I ever see Hannah's dad, I'll be putting him on the spot. "oh- we're doing great, spending lots of time with our FRIENDS, can you believe some people don't think homeschooled kids have friends?": (for the sake of clarity for that story, today was dd's last day of *real school* as we are going to be homeschooling )

Ah, with this kind of background (including his superiority complex) I can understand your annoyance. I don't know that I'd call him out on his comments but I'd have a hard time not holding a grudge.

Growing up we had a neighbor that had plastic geese in her yard, ugly plastic geese with bandanas.

She called my sister's car, which ran perfectly by the way, "a pile of junk"

That car was a 67 mustang, my parents constantly had people stopping to ask if they could buy it.

I've got plastic geese; no bandannas though.
I have a neighbor with a huge bird bath and a giant plastic seahorse sitting in the middle of it.

Did you do the patio for them? Or for yourselves?

Who cares what they think. Not everyone likes the same things. It might be terrible to them, and they just might have really crappy taste in patios.

I think you should go out and sit on the patio, and when they come back ask them with a beeming smile, "So, what do you think of the patio? Dh put so much work into it. Maybe you can come over and enjoy it with us sometime." Smile in a syrupy sweet way and watch them stutter...but I have a very black sense of humour when I let loose.

A little OT, but don't you just hate those paper thin windows?? We have them too and I worry about it all the time cause my 1yo likes to bang on them. One of these days I just know he's going to put his head or his hand through the glass.

Again, it's not about what he "thinks" of the patio, it's that he would have the nerve to make a negative comment behind our backs and say something different to dh. And, it's not about taste....it's just a brick patio, nothing fancy, and nothing new ( it was a bit of brick, a bit of cement and a bit of river rock before) it's about saying the job dh did looks terrible. It is not perfect, he is not a brick layer.

FTR, he did come by when I was at the bank, he told dh it looked great!

jeannie81, I do hate that the windows are paper thin...but it's so much to replace them, we have 32 windows in our house and I do love them! A pic just because, http://photo.xanga.com/housepaint/5c...191/photo.html

maybe I'll update w/ patio pics tomorrow, I have the befores just waiting to take the afters.

I wouldn't have the urge to talk to them about it at all. That's not the sort of thing I'd want out in the open. I don't know what they were doing in your yard, but I don't think it's a terrible comment to make to a spouse if you're at home, in private.

We used old bricks from my husband's grandpa's old homestead and we think it looks much better than new brick. Others like perfect symmetry.

Lovely house.

I would let this go. I'm sure (I'M SURE!!!) we have all said not-so-nice things about our neighbors to our DPs or friends at one point or another and said something totally different and pleasant to the neighbor her/himself. The only difference is, you happened to hear this. If he's not being snooty rude to you, I'd keep the peace.
